Refinishing an old 40X stock

Here's what my 40x rimfire stock turned out like recently. The walnut in these stocks isn't real fancy, it's just real nice. I was very lucky on this one, as there was no damage that required any deep sanding or repair. Finish is boiled linseed only, no stain or anything else. jd

that looks good. i have a buttstock/ forearm i have to do soon. mabie ill try it thanks

Sorry for the hijack, but I've got a 700SA I'd like to put into a single shot stock, which 40x stock would be right, the 40XB?

Just finished a 40 xbbr. Acetone then steam to raise 37 years of dents. Recountoured stock to mimic Kelby klub. It tracks much better. Multiple coats of linseed.
After each coat of linseed (commercial blend) I would sand with 800 grit and oil. After several coats it is as smooth as glass.

Check Ebay as well. I grabbed a 40x for 60 shipped to me and already inletted for BDL bottom metal(which is what I wanted). There are several on there although some folks hold them pretty dear given the prices they are asking.

OP, please post pics of your stock when you get started and finished with it. Always nice to see a project concluded.

Yeah, I know where to find them (and what they're worth) just wondering which exact stock fits. I thought the standard 40x fits the 722 with the straight bolt cut, and the 40xb has the angled bolt cut to fit a 700. I am leaving it single shot anyways and I have a varmint taper barrel so it will fit the heavy channel pretty well.

Just purchased a 40XB stock this morning, for my 700, once it gets here I'll be doing my own strip and refinish and can post some pics of the methods I use if others would like. Also, some of the modifications I'll be doing as I have a .250" recoil lug and RemAge barrel.

Got my stock yesterday and decided that rather than completely strip and refinish, that for right now I'll just refresh it. Lots of heavy grime and crud accumulated over the years on this one, so a quick scrub with Dawn and a scotch brite pad cut that all back. Wipedown with acetone to remove any and all traces of soap. Couple coats of BLO and it's looking good. This stock has lots of "character" but no major chunks or damage. Just plenty of little dings and scuffs. Looks good for now!

Pics to follow shortly.

Here's the pics of the refresh I did on this stock.

As received, and the seller used bubblewrap directly against the stock...

After a scrub with dish soap and scotch brite pad...

Then after a couple coats of BLO to restore the lustre and protect the wood...

Will be working on the inletting next, need to fit the barrel nut and Jewell trigger in there.

Where are you guys sourcing this boiled linseed oil ? I have an early 40X stock I'm redoing and want to keep it as simple and possible. The only stocks I've done were years ago using a Birchwood Casey Tru Oil kit. I would rather not have to deal with hand rubbed oils like the Birchwood Casey stuff unless it was much thinner/less viscous.

Thanks !!

Bloil is available at Home Depot , lowes . It's more labor intensive than Tru -Oil . If you add some Japan drier to boiled linseed oil it will dry a little faster .

Did you already modify the bolt handle cut ?

I've got about 20 stocks remaining after buying a pallet of them . The stock is at first looked like a 40x ( 722 straight bolt ) not a 40 XB ( 700 angled bolt ) but after looking at the pics better , I see I was wrong . Nice job !

If you are converting a 721 version 40X stock to the 700 style dogleg bolt handle make sure your bolt handle doesn't touch wood anywhere after you open up the bolt handle cut.

There doesn't seem to be enough of a cut for the new style bolt handle.

Well Rayjay, I'll have to look it over. It doesn't seem to give any interference, but I can't swear that it isn't touching. If it is, I'll relieve it a bit. The beauty of a simple oil finish is that you can modify or repair anytime and simply re-oil the area and it matches with no sign. jd

Once you get the walnut in hand you can then set about to purchase the $150 or so in hardware that it needs, and good luck on the hand stop :), and the White Line butplate is no longer made by anyone.

I have one of these that I'm refinishing, and I also picked up a complete with all hardware one off of ebay. In the end the one from ebay was cheaper. Haven't decided to refinish it yet. It's got really sharp crossed cannon cartouches.
