Reduce Recoil on 300 RUM

Buddy of mine is talking about getting the barrel ported, and since I'm not completely familiar with how thats done, I suggested a muzzlebrake (it's a hunting rig only) any suggestions on reducing recoil are welcome.

I have a Harrel's radial muzzlebrake on my 700 BDL, works great, but loud. This is strickly a hunting rifle.

A ported barrel will not reduce recoil as much as a brake equipped rifle will.
You can also add Graco reducers in the butt of the stock.....

+1 for Preacher. Porting helps but really isn't the answer. A brake is much better and on Preachers recommendation, I have a Graco installed in a rifle as well. They work very well in reducing recoil but do add 1/2# of weight if that's a consideration.

Put a brake on it. Wear ear plugs and muffs on the range. Loud is an understatement. I put a Vias on my first 300RUM and I actually enjoyed shooting it afterwards. All of my Ultras have brakes now. Lately I have been using Straight Shot Gunsmithing brakes, they work awesome. Ryan Pierce makes nice ones too.

I had a Remington 7400 in 35 Whelan magnaported years ago. It helped recoil, but nothing like a brake.

On the last two builds, a 7mag and 300wm, I've installed Harrels brakes (tactical for prone shooting) and the Grako dampner. It adds weight but I also found it helps balance out the rig very well. Recoil is such that all day shooting is not an issue. The brake is loud but where I shoot long range its all open plains so I don't bother anyone.
