Generally on Redding dies, I either don't have shell holder contact or very light shell holder contact for proper sizing. But it all depends on your rifle headspace. On my 223AI, I needed to remove some material from the top of the shell holder to properly size the case. I chose to reduce the height of the shell holder rather than shorten the die. Cheaper and easier for me.is it normal for it to cam over getting the right shoulder bump ?
where do I buy the skip shimsAs post #3 states, a lot depends on the amount of play in your press. Mine is 50+ years old and I have to use cam-over to even produce a zero bump. With that said, I full size all the time but only bump, when necessary, usually after about 3 firing or so.
Your bump gauge and caliper will provide the information necessary to make the optimum die adjustment. After that you can use Redding Competition Shell Holders or Skip Shims to make adjustments without having to change the lock ring of your die. Those devices make sizing adjustments a lot easier in my experience.
You can make your own by using feeler gauges cut into 2 strips (one on each side of the die).where do I buy the skip shims
Cam over also ensures that the force is applied twice during each handle stroke…Cam over just assures that you have a precise and repeatable relationship between the die and the shell holder. Think of the press as a spring. You want the force between the shell holder and the die to be greater than the force required to size the cartridge.
I purchased mine at Sinclair now owned by Brownell's.where do I buy the skip shims
