Redding Powder Measure Lubrication

I have a Redding Model 3 powder measure. I have used it a while and it is starting to seem to bind up when I am throwing a charge. Not like its cutting powder,I am loading with Varget) but just like it needs lubrication or something. I don't have a users manual and the Redding website wasn't any help for me.

Jim, sometimes that happens when a granule of powder gets in between the drum and the body, gets mashed up and just generally gums things up. Take the micrometer off the drum, then slide it out. Polish the drum up a bit with 0000 steel wool and do the same for the body where the drum rides. That should do it.

jim, here's another angle.wipe all the parts off with lighter fluid and put a thincoat of paste wax. nothing will stick to the parts any more. regards, treeman

Redding warns against the use of petroleum-based solvents because of the potential damage to the reservoir and drop tube, plastic), although I'm sure that it can be done with care. They suggest using alcohol. Beware of sharp edges.

You can get a download-link for the instructions for your powder measure by e-mailing Redding at:

Never had a problem with my Redding, but I do dissassemble and clean it with denatured alcohol occasionally. Last year, my Harrell's BR powder measure got sticky. The drum shims fell out. I called Lynwood Harrell, and he instructed me to clean with Gun Scrubber or brake solvent, and reinstall the shims after treating them with graphite.

I disassembled the measure and noticed a few grains stuck together in a little clump sticking things up. I polished the drum, applied a little bit of graphite and reassembled. It is working like new now. Thanks everyone for all of the info.
