Redding FL bushing sizing die Question

Hello, I am curious as to which would be a better method of sizing cases.

Method 1: Using a Redding FL bushing die to just barely bump the shoulder and sides of the case back .0015. But to do this i will need to have the die adjusted up quite high and by doing this, will not size the neck all the way down to the junction of the neck/shoulder.

Method 2: Use a Redding bushing neck sizing die first to size the neck to the desired diameter and depth. Then use a body die to bump the shoulder and sides back .0015.


what would you guys recommend as to the best/ most effiecient way to do this?

Are the redding shell holders necessary or just an easy point of referance to start with? What i have been doing is take a case that i know is getting tight on headspace. I will measure the tight case with my sinclair headspace comparator on my calipers and then just adjust the bump die down until im getting a shoulder bump of around .0015 or so. The bottom of the die is usually off the shellholder about an 1/8" or so......

Is one and half thousands (.0015) too much to be bumping my shoulders back? I am trying to size just enought so that i dont have a tight bolt closing. So the type s FL die wont get me one and a half thou (.0015) bump at the shoulder without the redding comp shell holders?

.0015 is fine. If you have the S series FL die just use that for sizing. It'll save you the extra step.
Bushing dies do not size the entire neck. Thats OK. The amount of sizing is adjustable and they should size most of it. If not your die might not be cut correctly.
Like gunamonth I use both methods on different rifles simply because of the die sets on hand.
Either method will work just fine. As GM said. Once its shootin don't mess with it

Never found a use for the Redding Comp holders. My press has a dead stop built in to it, no camming action to deal with. I could'nt care less where the shellholder is in relation to the die.
Most of my shellholders have been ground thinner to allow tighter headspaces in my rifles.
The Redding Comps are thicker than standard. Just the opposite of what I would want.
