Redding die issue?

Having what I think is a possible issue with my Redding bushing die for 7mm SAW. I ran a virgin case through the die which measures much smaller than a fired case and I don’t think should be sized by the die. Is this an internal finish issue? Has anyone experienced this with their Redding dies lately? Should I contact them to have them refinish? I’ve never had this happen with RCBS matchmasters, whidden, or older Redding sets that I have. 2F06187E-2CAE-4975-A2B4-19F2B9D794AA.jpeg

That case has a good scratch by what I see.

In my opinion the quality level of Redding dies has dropped considerably in the last couple of years. Last year I purchased some 9mm dies and ended up exchanging them with the vendor due to gouging/scratches in the dies that appear to have been caused by the tooling. The second set had the same issue. Ended up contacting Redding and they exchanged them for a set that was much better.

In December I order a set of 357Mag dies - same issue as above with the gouging/scratches in the dies - I have exchanged them 2x (now on my 3rd set) and still seeing this issue. Getting ready to contact Redding on these.

Never had these issues with their dies prior to 2022.

I purchased a 17 Hornet S die set about 3-4 years ago, which excessively sized down brand new cases to the degree my whole reloading room was shaking from my trying to get it to size one piece of brass! Crap falling off shelves, it took me 5 times of partial sizing, with lubing it over and over. I sent them back to Midsouth, I took a loss with a substantial restocking fee, but I just thought these were so poorly made.

I re-thought it a couple years later, gave them another shot at it... and purchased the same S die set again. This set was not as bad, but still grossly sizing the case too much. My Hornady die set I purchased in the interim was sizing PERFECTLY. I got ahold of Redding and they honed the sizing die for me. I had to send it in twice, with samples of their brass after sizing, and the Hornady brass after sizing for comparison, and unsized pieces of brass to test their work on, etc. That die is almost as good as my Hornady, but I wanted a bushing die, so it's close enough. Just a pain in the butt.

The customer service / tech guy was knowledgeable and courteous, said they had new people working there and they were struggling with keeping the quality up. I think they are still having quality control issues.

#1 clean die throughly, #2: Use enough case lube, especially spray on type...see it it improves.
#3 Then put die in lathe collet and lightly polish, clean die, lube case and check for improvement.

Modified shell holder? Verify you have .125" deck height. The first case into a cleaned die needs more lube than usual.

So I have a friend that has the Hornady die set for 7 SAW. He took brass fired from my rifle and ran it through, it looked absolutely perfect. My Redding die has the same issue, makes my entire bench shake and looks like it oversizes the body. I thought I was doing good by buying the more “premium” die set…boy was I wrong.

Call Redding ... this die is obviously defective and needs to be replaced. I wouldn't try to solve this through "unnatural acts" ... the manufacturer should do the right thing and replace it. I have six Redding FL Bushing dies and NONE of them ever produced anything but a perfect sizing result.

Most mass produced dies are case hardened and polished after they are finished machined . If you Chuck one up and true it with a good indicator, you will see that they are not round.

There is always the possibility that the die in question got by quality control.

I've got a new Redding die for my 243AI and it also creates some "scratches" on my cases. I thought maybe I wasn't using enough lube at first. After applying a generous coat of Imperial wax, the case was sized a little smoother but it was still chattering/coarse sound during the sizing. I guess I'll call Redding tomorrow and see what they say.

I had an issue with a redding 250 ai sizer 3-4 yrs ago. Inducing .010” neck runout. Took an hour on the phone to convince him it was the die. Sent it in, came back 2 weeks later with nothing to indicate what was done. Called and was told they reworked the neck. Sized a few cases and they got it down to .002 so i shelved them. I miss the rcbs wildcat dies

A few of my sets lately are doing the same from day 1
I’m send two Redding Type S dies back. One is for a 300 PRC that won’t even accept virgin Lapua brass without almost getting stuck.

The other is a 308 die. This die scratches the brass up something awful.

I’m using Hornady Match Grade dies no with no issues.
