Redding competition shell holders

I am trying to adjust a new Redding Type S FL sizing die so that my shell holder makes contact with the bottom of the die while only bumping the shoulder back .002". I got the .002" well enough, or the contact, but getting both with the tools I own is impossible. I am guessing that this is the reason Redding also sells the competition shell holder sets and the extra .002" increases in thickness of the shell holders is located between the base of the case and the top of the shell holder and is intended to close the gap that I have struggled to fill for the last hour. Some one please let me know if I am correct and if not point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance,
Emmett

Get a set of the competition she'll holders. You will like them. I use them all the time. Start with .010 and go down.

The normal deck height on the standard shellholder is .125 , the Competition Shellholders go from .135 on up .002 each . The #10 is the lowest .135 , they work great for me using a full sizing die with full contact on die to shellholder. Knowing your chamber length is important , using a Go Gauge installed in your chamber and building up the back of the gauge until you feel a slight resistant will give you your zero headspace . Listing that measurement you will be able to set your headspace where ever you want accurately . Your standard shell holder in most cases oversize your brass . Hope I Helped .

That was a big help. I could set up to get the bump I need but I wanted to get the ram to make contact with the bottom of the die. I seem to get more consistent results this way. Thanks, I will order a set now.

I your 2 goals are of equal importance, yes, the suggestions about the Redding Comp Shell holders are your best option.

There have been several threads recently concerning the Comp Shell holders. And the folks that swear by them are adamant about the fact they are the way to go. So to avoid being flamed, I will not say anything disparaging about them.

But I have a set in the cabinet that I never use (and they are for the most common case head I load for). I just don't share the preoccupation that the die must be in contact with the shell holder for consistent sizing results. But maybe my process is enough different than others, so I don't encounter the challenges they do.

I have seen nothing in my limited experience that leads me to believe that the holder has to bottom out to get consistent sizing or seating. At least with quality equipment. My problem is mostly in the equipment I purchased when I started loading. My press has a good bit of play after the handle has made it to the bottom of the stroke that I believe effects the end result and thought that bottoming it out against the die would eliminate this.

I don't think is good for any piece of equipment to be stressed any more then it's designed for , a proper setup having the die to make full contact to remove any play in linkage and threads and that's it . Using lube on clean cases reduces the wear on dies and press. The Competition Shellholders need full contact for accurate sizing .

You are correct

Thanks everyone for the info provided, I have ordered a set and maybe soon I can fit a new press into my budget as well.
