PJ, If i have the stats correct ac cross the 3 different groups that shoot 1000yd Benchrest,the smallest group 5 shot is Bill Schrader from the NBRSA it is 1.473ins shot on 24/3/'02.At ten shots it is John Voneida from the PA williamsport group at 3.151 shot on 3/7/'95. Neither of the cartridges used for the records was a 6BR.JR..Jeff Rogers.............................................

Yes, one hole at 100 yards. And if you hope to win many trophies it had better be a small hole.
But don't let talk like this scare you away. There is a big difference between that occasional group that sets a new world record and all the other groups fired on a given day. For every 1.5" group that you see at 1000 yards you will see ten that measure 15.0".

So what you are telling us is that If I had a gun that won't shoot "one hole" groups at 100 yards it won't shoot well enough to win at 1000 yards?????I'll tell ya,I've seen a gun shoot one hole five shot groups at 100 yards with a 70fps e.s..How well would that do at 1000 yards with that e.s.???..I've also seen a gun that would shoot no better that .75 inch groups at 100 yards with a e.s. of 18 win about everything there is to win in a 1000 yard BR season.Shooting a good 1000 yard group IMHO has nothing to do with the way your gun shoots at 100.Cheechako said:

Well Boyd, for the life of me I can't see where you read any of that in my post. We were talking about 100 yard groups. I said that a one-hole group at 100 yards had better be a small one. You took that simple comment and ran it into something far more than what I said.
I've been shooting both point blank and long range Benchrest for a lot of years and don't think I need to be lectured about what does and doesn't work.

Just yesterday I was talking with Hobie Bond..,Eastern Regional Director--NBRSA)..and the subject of rules changes came up!!! I tossed out my idea of allowing the use of 17lb and under rifles with flat bottomed stocks in either the Heavy Varmint,HV) or the Sporter class....it would require a simple rules change on weight and removal of the criteria about stock drop at heel etc...this would not negate or eliminate the use of 10-1/2 pound ppc's in the class ...but would allow the use of a heavier,,up to 17lb)) gun and one with a typical 1000yd,Shehane-Master Class-Kelbly) stock...
This would allow the long rage,,,hhahah range))) shooters to shoot in short range events with their existing equipment,,all under the umbrella of NBRSA)) and do some serious load development and work on gun handeling skills in a tournament situation ....then we could all see just how small,real world) groups that our 1000yd light guns and chamerings are capable of ....it would of course allow the use of a 17lb. ppc!!!! That should shake up the record books,,,it would do much for the shooting community and BENCHREST as a whole,,
I bring this up because of all of the wonderful,great shooting, 1000yd light guns,LG-under 17lb) that folks have, and are only able to shoot them a limited number of 1000yd events....NBRSA should,as a sanctioning body, allow these fine guns to compete with the short range,100-200,,point blank) guns,,,,it would bring more shooters out to the various events and the conveince of seeing just where every shot goes,immediately !!) on the paper at 100-200 would allow the long range shooter to really dial in,tune) their loads more than the limited ammount possible at 600-1000yds...it would help with bullet selection and development,testing) and twist and bore dia. testing and improving could and would occur...
I doubt that the long range 6.5-284's and 300 AI will best the time honored ppc's ...but these competitors will gain the advantage of more tournament testin and benchrest shooting overall will flourish........

I have shot my 11 pound short range legal guns at long range and had a ball ...it is time we see the advantage of crossover shooting and let the competitors/shooters discover the advantage of every aspect of BENCHREST.....and be able to use all of these marvelous,,EXPENSIVE to build) rifles at various ranges all over the country......Roger

That's a great idea. It could bring more pure LR shooters into the point blank matches for sure. Several years ago I was coming home from shooting LR in Reno and went by the Visalia range because they were having a point blank match and I wanted to stop and see all my buddies. I had one of my 17 pound rifles with me so decided to enter the tournament, shooting out-of-class, just to see how I would do. I was surprised because I did very well and would have beat more than half of the entries. With a little tweaking I could have done better and it would have been interesting to see how I would have fared against other guys doing the same thing.
I already shoot one of my 6 PPC guns at 600 yards and have done well, winning more than a few fake-wood trophies. All you have to do is add a weight system to get it closer to 17 pounds and it does well in good conditions. Tom Price has shot one of his PPCs all the way out to 800 yards in F_Class and managed to clean every target. The 1000 yard stage was his undoing, however. But he blames it on the target crew who advised him that his bullets were going the paper sideways. He said that flustered him and he dropped several points.
But he was still hitting the target.
Anyway, anything that will encourage more shooters to try different stuff, I'm all for. Unfortunately, NBRSA is very slow to change and there is always opposition to anything new. Even if it's a good idea.
