recommended caliber for new benchrest shooter

Hi, looking for advice on a caliber, starting out in benchrest shooting, I am purchasing a Savage 12 benchrest rifle, i have the following calibers to choose from .308, 6mm br and 6.5x.284. I will be shooting 200, 300 and out to a 1000 yards, any advice on caliber would be appreiciated

I think the 6br would be a good one to start with easy to load for doesn't pound you and it'll easily reach out to 1000 yards.

Unless it's factory class, or other rules prohibit it, I'd look for a good used BR rifle. You could have a switch barrel gun that serves short and long ranges better than a factory Savage(or any factory)rifle will. You can find them for a little more than the Savage will set you back, and many people wind up going this route sooner or later anyway. So cry once I guess applies. I know of one or two for sale that would do nicely. -Mike Ezell

My girlfriend and I just picked up 2 Savage 6br's. She has a 12 benchrest and I got a F-class.

For us it seemed like a good choice. But only time will tell. :)

Give Bob White at Shooter's Corner a call. He can probably set you up with a used Benchrest rifle that fits your budget and you will be money ahead over a factory action. http://www.benchrest.com/shooterscorner/thelist.pdf

I give this advice frequently and IMO, its the best advice you can get.

Bob has a huge inventory of used bench rest rifles, which unlike say, hunting rifles, dont typically have all kinds of wear on them... Many of his guns are 6ppc, but he's a great gunsmith and can put a 6br barrel on there with no problem.

If you dont specifically need to be shooting a factory rifle, giving bob a ring is the smartest thing you can do.
