New Shooter for Benchrest shooting

Hi, looking for advice on starting out in Benchrest shooting. I want to shoot 6mmbr, Any recommendations on rifles and how to get started.

ok I will go first.... We need to know what type of shooting you want to do. 6BR might not be the right cartridge for that type of shooting. What other gear do you have? Are you a reloader? how experienced are you at reloading?

Before we can get too specific, we will need to know: What distance 100-300 yard, 600 yard or 1000 yard?

The best first step that I would recomend is go to a couple of matches, observe, and talk to the shooters. I have found them to be very helpfull.

For 600-1000 yard bench rest you would be better off with the 6br improved,
6brx or Dasher would be my suggestions, there whats winning in the 1k scene anyway.

+1 on Wayne's post, and not just because that's whats winning. The Dasher and 6BRX just have what is needed for 1k. For 600yrd the 6br is just as good as any Dasher or 6BRX, and it's give or take between shooter skills at 600. Take it out to 1000 and the Dasher, or the 6BRX will win 9 out of 10 times over the 6br!

Just out of curiosity, are these types of matches held near you, and do you have a convenient place to practice at these distances?

no i am joining pa1000 and there is a 600 yard range in cananstota, ny, both are 4 hr drives, i have a 300 yard range in town.. thanks

WELCOME TO THE SITE AND TO LONG RANGE BENCH SHOOTING. I'M JUST AN OLD FARMER WHO LOVES TO SHOOT. THE GUYS ARE RIGHT WITH THE DASHER AND THE STRAIGHT 6BR. I HAVE A 6.5X284,DASHER,6MM REM,6MMAI,6BR, AND ALL OF THE PPC'S. AFTER ALL THE SMOKE CLEARS WE ALL SHOOT THE DASHER. IF THE WIND ISN'T BLOWING MUCH,THE 6BR WILL DO FINE AT 600 AND OK AT 1000. THE DASHER PRETTY WELL TAKES OVER IF YOU'VE GOT ANY WIND. I CAN DO ALL RIGHT WITH THE 6BR IF THE WIND AIN'T TOO BAD AT 600, BUT AT 1000 IT CAN'T HOLD UP TO THE DASHER. THE DASHER DOESEN'T HAVE MUCH IF ANY MORE RECOIL OR MORE IMPORTANTLY BARREL MOVEMENT TIME THAN THE 6BR AND MORE FPS. THE LARGER GUNS MENTIONED ABOVE ALL WORK WELL, BUT I THINK THE RECOIL AND BARREL MOVEMENT TIME KEEP THEM FROM SHOOTING AS SMALL A GROUP AS YOU CAN WITH THE DASHER. MY TWO-BITS WORTH ANYWAY, GOOD SHOOTING,JF

Sent you a PM. I am a member of pa1000 yard and shoot a 6mm br.
Id be happy to discuss either with you.

I'm also a member of pa1000 yard and shoot a 6mm BR.

For the sake of keeping things simple... stick with the standard 6mmBR. It's a very capable round at 1K.

I'll send you a pm with my contact info... I'll be glad to share what I know. I wouldn't mind speaking with you about 3-gun competition as well.
