Recommendations Needed - Calipers

I need to purchase a new dial caliper for measuring shoulder bump. I prefer only dial type calipers.

What are you guys using / recommend?

Thanks

Might want to think about that. Digital avoid potential mistakes by zeroing them out.

I use everything from the cheapest to the nicer made. About any of them will do the job, but when you use the nicer ones, it brings a smile to your face. Probably the smoothest I use are the Starrett 0-6" dial calipers I bought used.

Any top brand will be good. Shars will do you just fine for reloading. Remember we measure in thousandths on a reloading bench if we’re good. Some on here know what it takes to measure to the tenth consistently and thats not even what we need reloading- not even the confusing digital half ten thousandth

I have a Mitutoyo and a much less expensive Lyman. Both read the same, no difference that I can tell with comparable accuracy.

You couldnt give me a set of digital calipers!A few years ago.Now I would not go back to the dial calipers.I used a set of mituoyo for years but they were the ones that read .200” for one revolution on the dial, got very hard to read with my old tired eyes.Picked up a set of hornady digital on sale that work great but since then bought a set of digital mytitoyo’s.Both read and do the same thing and only differences in my opinion is the mytitoyo has a better feel to them but cost 4times as much lol...

I've been real happy with my Starrett 120A-6
Picked it up used several years ago, and had an opportunity to bring it to work for calibration training to verify its accuracy.

I'm wondering how much better the rack and pinion in dial calipers are better than another when both need to travel correctly. I feel that they are subject to more ware and tear than a digital caliper. I have used a dial caliper that jumped its gearing due to some dirt on the rack. Since then several other not so expensive digital calipers lasted a couple of years and lastly I have the I Gaging EZ Cal digital calipers that once zeroed do hold zero. Just my two cents.

I have a Starrett 120A and a no name Harbour Freight digital that is over 10 years old. Both give me the exact same readings. The Starretts do have a better feel, like a real tool, but performance is identical. Oh, and rack and pinion can jump a tooth if dropped or jarred, easily reset by disassembly but something to consider
