Recommendations for bullet selection wanted.

After eight long months I finally got the call this morning that my 6.5-284 was finally in. I had McGowen Barrels put together an Italian Mauser style action with a 24" Douglas #2 contour. They then shipped it to Mcmillian for an edge technology composite stock. This evening I will finally get the chance to mount a Ziess Conquest 4.5-14x50 with a rapid Z varmint reticle.

Now, the question is what weight bullet seems to perform best in the 6.5? I would like to pick a weight with a high BC that can be used for white tails and possibly varmints. From what I've read, there seems to be a preference for the 140's, for long range accuracy. Barnes offers a 127 grain designed for long range shooting but I don't know of anyone who's had any experience with it. I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks.

Hello and congrats on your build.

I run a 6.5/06 Imp and run 141gr Cauterucios, BC is 0.630. Have run 142 SMKs and if I was looking to trya new bullet. I would getting some Berger 140 Hybrid's.

Varmints and Cervids may require two different bullets. I have used A-Max's for smallish deer and Hogs but if the Big Boy showed up I would feel better with something a little heavier constructed, the Sierra Pro Hunter line comes to mind. I am not saying the A-Max doesn't kill and all I have shot were DRT but none exited. For Varmints there is no question in my mind that is the bullet! I understand the Berger's work well at longish ranges however when I was carrying them nothing showed. Maybe they knew and were afeared! ::)

Doh!! Looking for hunting bullets, sorry, did not catch that... But Amax's are serious whitetail medicine... Look no further than those or the Berger hunting 140...
