Recomended Bullet Stop Height

What Height should a bullet stop be for 600yd range for prone and bench rest shooting be. Target height for 100 to 600 YD. for no shoot over. Larry

Thays a wide open question... how high are you mounting targets? How well do you shoot?

My personal shooting berm is 6ft high.... the berm at work is 20ft...

just all depends how high you feel you need to make it safe for who ever is shooting there...

I thought I ask both. I cant find back stop height. Recommended height target at 100 to 600
This will be a public range. Larry

20 ft. sounds like it should be OK, as long as it your personal range. I believe or 1000 yard bank is about 60 ft. Can't remember how high our 600 yard is, but I remember when it was built, that one of our members was on the Dozer, thinking this guy has got to be nuts going up that thing like that. I didn't even want to walk up it. ???

If I recall correctly from my club's NRA Technical Range Evaluation a few years ago, the NRA recommended minimum height for a backstop was 20 feet above the center of the target on ranges up to 100 yards. We modified all of our backstops to exceed that minimum. On our 600 yard KD range, the range engineer recommended twice that height. We fortunately had a hill behind our pits so with some modification, we have a safe backstop about 75 feet about target.

Larry,
The NRA has a giant 3 ring binder full of specs and designs. The book has some name relating to range safety which is escaping me at the moment. I don't have it available right now to reference but you may want to try the NRA. I am sure it is available electronically.
Good Luck,
Scott

Thanks for the help. By checking your answer. I found Florida and 5 other states are covered. Under Fla Stat 823,16-6 we are covered as long as the range meets or exceed NRA specification. Pretty much a no brainer to me. For around $300.00 we can get the range inspected and bring it up to meet or exceed NRA Specification and we will be ok.
Thanks all Larry

Larry,
That is exactly what our club in MN did. We had some safety concerns as the berms were built 30 years prior. The range inspection was a great experience and we learned much. While we did end up spending about $45K on berm improvements, we proved to the city and surrounding neighbors that we were serious about safety. The improvements also resulted in much lower insurance costs. Many states, including MN, defer all range specifications to the NRA standards.

Good Luck,
Scott
