recoil pad

I know this is probably here somewhere, but my searching ability sucks.
What is the best way to remove a glued on pad from fiberglass stock, without causing damage to the stock.
Also where can I find a stainless butt plate.
Thanks

The last two I did varied in method. I used a chisel and a stiff putty knife on one, carefully using the chisel as a wedge to open a crack and the putty knife to push deeper. Prying carefully, I managed to get it off.
The other one was done well, the chisel didn’t work. I had to cut it off with a hacksaw and sand the rest off.
I’ve made a couple butt plates out of 1/4” aluminum. I wouldn’t dare to try stainless. The problem is matching the profile of your stock. You could try the Company that made the stock. They might sell them.

Warming them with a heat gun is what I do. A hair dryer can work if it has a good high setting. Go slowly and heat it evenly. Once you see a seperation, get a thin, flexible putty knife in there and keep some upward pressure on it as you continue to heat it.

Wrapping the butt ahead of the pad with aluminum heat duct tape is an extra bit of insurance if it's painted.

Good shootin' - Al

I have also cut them off on a table saw with a sharp carbide blade, getting as close to the stock as possible. Easy then to remove the thin strip with heat or sand it off if you're afraid of damaging the stock finish.

Never done this… my disclaimer… but, placing the stock in a freezer then place the pad in a vice and bend it off… the cold makes the adhesive brittle…

Pad came off with heat. Now the stock needs to be filled with a drillable epoxy, and seeing as how this will be a hunter gun I need to keep the weight down.
I probably be better off trying to find an aluminum butt plate and gluing that on.

heat it up to break the bond a little and use a wire type cheese cutter to slide down and pop off. works pretty slick

It came off with a heat gun and a putty knife.
Now the problem is filling the void, it is foam filled and I need to keep the weight down, so I'm thinking epoxy and a very lite aluminum butt plate.
I'm going to try making a plate out of 1/8th aluminum and then either gluing or screwing it on.
Any suggestions or thoughts?

Void pic? I wouldn’t fill a void with epoxy to save weight. Aluminum butt plates are easy

Aluminum butt plates are easy

I'm going to try this with a Dremel and file and some sandpaper, all by hand. I've never done this before so it will be my first attempt, we will see.

I had a couple water jetted..made a template and they cut them a bit oversize for final finishing. Worked great and will save you a bunch of time. -Al
