Recoil lug

But the system as applied to a RemAge barrel, would then be of the same consequence?
Yes...in a nutshell. I'm not a fan.

There are good posts on here about the design and function of the Remington "Three Rings of Steel" design. You have to decide for yourself how far you should deviate from the original design or have a smith correct the issues that need to be addressed to correct the clearances.

Surface grinders are needed, when you "really" need it.And it's a little more than just real estate.....grinding dry requires,at least for us,some serious "dust" evac.Which isn't that big of deal,we build custom systems for woodpeckers,to include impellors.Think of grinding dry like a welding cell....do you really want that chit floating around your shop?Wet grinding is safer (and better from a heat standpoint) but isn't without it's own set of issues.

If the question is whether or not grinding a lug is worth the effort....it is,IMO if you look at "recoil" as part of a custom stock. But it's just part of a broader question. How important is recoil management within your stock design?Back to regular programming,I'm watching paint dry....doh.

And benchresters use. 001 bolt to barrel clearance, and hunters want .010, sooo, if it's within that range, shouldn't it still be safe? Thinner lug would put the bolt FURTHER in the barrel, NOT creating more space for a case rupture. I set at five, so two either way is not gonna make a difference from a safety standpoint in my view

If you have the ability to "set at five", why use a lug to change what you set it at?

Well, I don't subscribe to the .001 for BR.
Man, I didn't know a dry cleanup of a recoil lug created problems.

Butch,
Me too. If your action runs that true, it would be great. But that tight a clearance requires lubricant. Never heard of it in practice. --Jerry
