Bedding an Action Without the Barrel? Why Not?

I am with the rest of the fellas here.
I assume it's not a 700 style action either? Otherwise the recoil lug bedding would be an issue as well. Gotta have the barrel for proper alignment and to set desired clearance of barrel in the stock. To bed without the barrel would be very foolish IMO. Just be patient and wait for the barreled action to be completed.

Not hardly, i line everything up with the barrel in and pre bed along with the pillars. Then i bed without the barrel i don't want any stress…. If it has a recoil lug i just have tape on the bottom…… jim

If your doing a gun used in competition every thing as far as level goes off the bottom of the fore arm. The bore must be parallel to the bottom and centered and scope mount but be leveled left and right…… jim

The forearm bottom of a prone rifle (or a hunting rifle) isn't parallel to the centerline of the stock...

Benchrest riffles are different.

I adopted Richard Franklin's way after watching a video of him doing a bedding job awhile back. It's a great way to set up the barreled action in the stock.

Personally, I don't care for pillars.

I'm going to need to see the tool that AMU uses. Now, how to research that rascal.?

I leave a picitinny rail mounted to the action when I bed the rifle. The extraction tool is in the form of a box. It's open on the bottom so that it slides down over the action and sits on the top of the stock straddling the action. A pair of scope rings are mounted to the rail. An undersized bar is slipped into the rings, the bar has a tapped hole drilled into it. A threaded stud is then placed through a hole in the top of the box and screwed into the bar which was inserted into the scope rings. A pair of beveled washers are placed onto the stud and then a nut. Turn the nut with a wrench, the action is pulled straight up out of the stock.

Mine is a variation of this.

It's your time, spend it how you want. But you're not gaining anything that way. Very easy to keep stress off the action while bedding with the barrel installed. No secret to it.

Jim, I guess you have gained alot, just as I have from reading this.

Oh yes i gained, I did a lot of testing and it is superior to any way i have tried but it is time consuming. At 70 all i have is time to tinker. I did a screw in Bat last year and it set a record with it and i did the same only i glued and screw it the same way and the same gun shot 4 new records. It does work, I just did a F class Panda and it has a lug and the first group out of the gun was .070 for five shots and i backed it up and it was a little smaller……. Not bad for a 1000 yd. Dasher…… jim
