rechambering a short action

Hey fellas,great site here!
I have a weatherby Vanguard chambered in .243win with a 1:10 twist 24" barrel. It's just a low volume varmint gun for coyotes.
I'd like to have it rechambered to a 6mm-284 wildcat. Is this doable considering the case is .130" longer than the 243? Will the action and mag box handle and cycle these ok? ???

Hi finstr,

Welcome to 6mmBR. your 284 project might fit in a short action providing you do not want to use VLDs. But it will still be tight as far as COAL (cartridge overall length) goes. To use VLDs, you better use a long action.
Have you considered chambering in 6mm BR? That would fit nice in a short action.

Cheers,

You can make it work if you stay with the shorter bullets. A long action would be a better choice.

Ask PTG how long their throat length is to determine if your bullets will seat short enough for your magazine. Frankly I would shoot it as a single loader so you can load for max velocity and accuracy. I hunt with a Ruger #1 and am pretty efficient at quick single loading using a cartridge carrier on the butt stock.
