rechamber from 308 to 300wsm

Is it possible to run a 300 wsm reamer in a 308 chamber and get it right? This is on a remington varmint barrel finished at 26 inches. thanks

Yes, it is possible. I would suggest boring the existing chamber out to allow the pilot of the WSM reamer to engage the bore. Then go to work on the boltface.

You'll have to open up the feed rails as well to get the cases to feed. I forget what the case head diminsion is, but it will have to be opened up as well. You may also run into the same problem that Winchester ran into and the only cure was to use the claw extractor to feed the cases reliably. I have heard of the model 700 feeding the cases, but I have not heard if they do it reliably as the claw extractor Model 70's do.

Winchester never came up with a good system feeding those cartridges, short mags )like a push feed action can. And even they bind in a push feed with a double stack magazine. In fact Winchester came up with the controlled round push feed CRPF and I have two. It eliminates the big claw extractor and incorporates the extractor from their pushfeed action. You need a single stack magazine for the short mag cartriges to feed from controlled round feed action reliably in my opinion with production tolerances.

Converting 308 to 300WSM.

You might spend a lot less money and aggrevation just buying a 300 WSM. Remington sells them with a $35.00 price increase to feed Rick Jamison patent habbit.

If you are hard headed enough to take on this project consider buying a completely new bolt and center feed magazine box from Dave Kiff at PT&G. It will make the job much easier and increase your odds of success.

The 300wsm is a 75,000 cup presure cartridge and the 308 Winchester is a 55,000 cup presure cartridge. Make sure you will have enough metal in the barrel to be safe. If your smith has to set back the barrel you may not have metal.

Remember you are retrofitting a $80.00 factory barrel. It will never shoot like a $300.00 after market barrel.

The issue of piloting the reamer has been discussed.

Good luck
