If I remember correctly, the cone was to encase the whole cartridge inside the barrel which was to make it safer/stronger in case of cartridge seperation. I think there was a bennefit to feeding as well, IMO.

They all have to be recessed enough to support the opposite side of case so extractor can grab the rim without it falling off as soon as starts to come out of the chamber.
