Rebuilding an AR15, wheres the gurus?

Robert Whitley made the most accurate upper i ever owned.

I shoot a variety of AR's. I had looked at the Whitley's, but just couldn't bring myself to pay the price. I follow most of his recommendations when building mine.

But, then I got a good deal on one with little use in 20P. I haven't shot it much yet, but I can already tell it will by my most accurate AR also. They are that much better.

You've heard guys telling you how filthy they can get very true if running
direct impingement "DI".
If your overhauling you should maybe check out a piston operating system.
We have 2 D I guns Pain in the butt to clean even after 20-30 rounds.
Where as the piston system on my
Patriot Ordinance the BCGand upper stay quit clean. 1-200 rounds
Instead of all that hot gas coming back into your action a rod moves reward to operate the bolt, some gas is purged at the gas block, the rest exits muzzle.
I'm no expert but I can honestly tell you next to a piston operating system, DI sucks.

If you are going to buy an upper go with White Oak...
I have not ever seen a need for an adjustable gas block in a 223 but it won't hurt to have one. If you do get one go with a clamp on style. I use them on my 243 LBC and 308 gas guns.

Yep, they definitely run cleaner because you don't have all that gas blowing back thru the action. While the gas system is fine for a rifle not used with a suppressor, it's the suppressor itself holding back gas pressure that sends a lot more dirt and junk back into the system.
I have heard arguments either way regarding accuracy and which system moves more and sooner...but, I don't know. I read the article Whitley wrote and he talks about muzzle brakes needing to be equal or concentric in regards to how they let gas escape. It sure seems like to me the bullet is well out of the rifling and gone on it's way before any brake gets active. I definitely agree that you do not want anything on the muzzle horsed down tight.
I have long held that the biggest accuracy issue with the AR is lock time. Having that big archaic hammer swing around in a two inch circle to hit the striker doesn't help much. Someone needs to come up with a striker fired system like in a Glock.
Still, one has to admit...there cant be too much wrong with the rifle...look at how most of them will shoot!!!

Make sure that the barrel nut on the Seekins hand guard will accommodate the diameter of your barrel. I have a couple of those hand guards and I really like them, however the barrel nut would not fit over my 24" bull barrel.

Ive thought about what you said here.... Im planning on measuring before I order. This has been on my mind. The barrel nut says its 1 inch OD. I think I am 1 inch OD... thats my next hurdle when I go back home to pick it all up and check..

My 2 cents...

Superlative Arms Gas Bleed Block
Lightweight carrier
Carbine Buffer with no guts, carbine spring and a spacer if ran in a rifle buffer tube
Geissele Hi Speed trigger

Tune to lock back on a empty mag.

Honestly for the price of a precisuon upper the robert whitley uppers are decently priced for a precision rig, same amount of money as if you buy the parts and build something...

Ive thought about side charging uppers, but then id have to buy a new bolt too. My BCG is all fine... no reason to throw it to the side..
Not on a jp.... side charge on the left side. Keep your finger on the gas!

Homebuild is the way to go. this is the way I went to build the most precise .223 AR 15 i could

1) Krieger 1 in 7.7 twist HBar barrel.

2) DPMS Heavy Duty Lo Pro slick side upper. in addition to the barrel nut, used Loc Tite sleeve cement to glue in the
barrel to the upper. the face of the upper was lapped using Brownells AR lapping tool.

3) Rock River Arms handguard

4) Young Manufacturing BCG

5) Sig Sauer lower. replaced the forward pivot pin with a bolt. absolutely zero play between upper and lower

6) Geissele High Speed National Match trigger

7) Magpul PRS stock

built several precision AR's myself that shot very well but for consistently accurate with a range of bullets robert's upper has them all beat.

that said i have a YM national match side charger and mega upper to match on the way. Going to do this one in a 6mm grendel. Just looking for the right barrel now.

building AR's is fun and addicting.
