So I am getting ready to rebarrel my sporter, a Savage 12FV with Accutrigger in .243, it's pillar bedded in a Sharpshooter Supply LVT stock which I like, Weaver Grand Slam 6.5-20 scope mounted in Z rings which I am happy with. Basically just want to build the most accurate rifle I can within a reasonable budget. It will be the first time I've done anything like this although I am an experienced wood worker. I've been really happy with the .243 so changing cartridges is not an option.
It's been a reasonably accurate predator rifle, generally in the .8-1" range with factory Remington 100's and Federal 85 SGK's. It shoots best though with light weight handloads including the Berger 68's and Hornady 70's up to Sierra 85's (best groups in the .35" range-average around .55"). It also has about 900 rounds through it, and the barrel is not getting any better, so I have ordered a LW 28" Savage drop in with 8 twist for it. I've also ordered go/no-go gauges and a savage barrel nut wrench, already built a barrel adapter for my bench vise. Most of my shooting is in the 100-300 yard range, but I do get the opportunity to shoot at 600 or a little longer quite a bit so I am thinking about moving up a weight class to shoot 100-107 gr. loads for 300+ yard shooting, it does get windy here in Texas.
So what else should I be doing while I have it apart to rebarrel?
I've been reading all about scope mounting, all i did when I installed it the first time was use a little blue loctite on a cheap base and screwed it down. I am thinking for 600 yard shooting I don't need a 20 MOA base but I'm open to it, do most people bed the base to the action?
Any suggestions on the little things that matter would be appreciated.
