Rebarreling

So when it comes to rebarreling a rem 700.... When you buy a bbl from a custom maker, what do you get? Just a bbl in your cal, and a twist you pick? Meaning is it chambered by them, or does a smith have to do that ? Is it threaded, is it cut to your length?
How important is it to know what bullet you'll shoot as far as setting up the chamber? When this is done by a smith is blueprinting, lapping a normal part of this process? School me on the norm here? Thinking of a 280 rem build with 5r rifling, a 9.5 twist to shoot 140's to 160ish bullets out of a 22" - 24" heavy sporter bbl.

You get a barrel blank in your choice or contour and twist. It has to be threaded, chambered, and crowned by a gunsmith. Get a Krieger, Bartlein, or Brux, they are already lapped.

Blue printing of action is extra. You will need to know what bullet you will be shooting before barrel is chambered since it will dictate freebore. If reamer has a short freebore it can be lengthened, but not the other way around.

So when setting up the chamber for a specific bullet. Your basically stuck with shooting only that one bullet ? I was thinking the 9.5 twist would suit the 140 to 160 range i mentioned, sorta a middle ground for each. This will be a hunting gun, and i'd like to have a choice in what i'd use for what. Is my thinking off here ? Sorry if i'm asking dumb questions, but this is new ground for me. I've reloaded some in the past for the gun in it's current factory 7mm mag cal from 140 bt to 175 rd noses. Didn't seem to fussy with anything i shot from it.

No, you will be able to shoot bullets with similar profiles.
Set it up for the 140's and you will be able to shoot the 160's as well, all that will happen is they will seat further into the case, that's all.

There are a few manufacturers (barrel) that will also fit their barrel to your action. Check their websites and they will have details on what they do. Some don't do any in house work, others do a bunch. Usually when one installs & chambers a barrel on your action, the action is trued in the process.

Call Mickey Coleman or any of the other excellent BR gunsmiths, a couple of whom post regularly on this board. They'll set you straight. And there's a huge amount of info on this subject if you'll use the search tool, and even just Google.
