rebarreling a ruger 77/22mag

I would like to know about re barreling my 77/22 mag to 17 hmr and what the approx. cost would be? I have never had a rimfire done before. Thanks RW

RW,
Cost is relative to what you want to buy as there are probably more barrel companies than ever before making replacement barrels for a Ruger 77/22. Just gotta look around and see what those companies want in terms of the quality of barrel you want. I mean the spread in pricing can be huge ranging from a decent barrel just under $200 to as high as $400+ for a Match Grade .22 barrel. Just my thoughts.

Certainly Dave gave you a link for the best (IMHO). But if you are looking for barrels a bit cheaper, might want to call Dan Killough Shooting Sports (www.killoughshootingsports.com) and see if they have one that'll work on your rifle and isn't quite as expensive as a Lilja barrel. BTW, if you decide to order from a barrel maker directly, the waiting periods now are long, anywhere from 4 months to a year, so you'd be better off finding a barrel that a dealer has in stock. I was recently quoted a 5 months (1:18/30 Cal MG barrel) wait from a good company, but certainly not a Lilja. Lilja told me 6 - 8 month if I were lucky and ended up getting lucky at Bruno's for an in stock Kreiger, while Kreiger direct is backed up forever (more than a year). Be sure to also post here and simply ask and see if anybody has a barrel available for your project.

i TOOK THE EASY WAY AND ORDERED A TAKE OFF FROM CLARKS CUSTOM GUNS...FOR $35.00 I GOT A FACTORY RUGER BARREL. I WILL TRY IT FOR A WHILE BEFORE I ORDER MORE EXPENSIVE BARREL.

Do the 77/22mag still use the clamp to hold the barrel on, or did they switch to a threaded barrel?

As of a few year's ago, Ruger started threading the barrels on their 77/17, and their 77/22 rifles. One definitely would need to determine whether they have a rifle that uses the V-Block in order to buy a custom barrel.

I used to have very good results with Green Mountain barrels, but they have since gone away from producing barrels for the Ruger 77 rimfire series of rifles.

Funny thing is that while Ruger goes away from the switch barrel aspect of rimfires, CZ has caught on and decided to take advantage of that fact.

And by cz doing that they made it easier for pretty much anyone to put a match barrel on themselves :)

Thanks for the help guys, I called Clarke guns and they said that since ruger has gone to threaded barrels that take offs are kind of scarce. That would be a great way to go if they were available! I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a custom barrel but I might later on, why Ruger would change such a good design I don't know? It sure has worked great on 10-22's for a long time!

Call Randy at CPC. He will fix you up. He actually knows how to make a Ruger 77/22 shoot. he did the bolt rework on my 77/17 HH and fit my Pacnor for me.

+1 for CPC! He does a super job on a stock 10/22 trigger. Years ago, I spent a lot of time and parts trying to teach myself how to do Ruger 10/22 triggers. Send them to Randy. It's fast and cheap.

Thank You very much for the tip on CPC that would seem to be the way to go!! That amount of work for the work you get sounds very reasonable and I am sure that they shoot a lot better. I would like a little lighter trigger than what they say they can get down to, I would like to be about 2 lbs or a little less. but it sure is cheaper than an after market trigger. Thanks Guys I will be contacting them.

I wonder what the 22wmr ammo situation is going to be? Here locally 17hmr is about half of the price of 22wmr!
