Ruger 77/22 conversion

A few years back a member (now deceased) said he converted Ruger 77/22's to 17HMR by modifying the receiver to accept the longer 17 HMR magazines. Has anyone heard or know of someone that does this? Any input appreciated, Gotcha

NO MODIFICATION to the Action needed. All that is needed is the Proper Magazine and Triggergard/magazine Floorplate provided that you have a NON/Boatpaddle stock

Good Luck

Thanks Hippy! I've checked Clark custom & Volquartson (on-line) .... No help there:(. It sounds like you are knowledgeable. I have the original walnut stock will there be any modification to the stock necessary? Or, is this a straight bbl., magazine, floor plate swap with floor plate screw spacing remaining the same? ....... The Clark Custom Lothar Walther bbl.'s look real interesting. ;)

Most Kustom barrels are .920 therefore you would have to open your existing stock to accept the larger diameter . I believe Shilen & Lilja make a Sporter weight bbl as does Green Mountain. The Floorplate has the same spacing for either LR or Mag NO modifications needed. Midway usually has what you need in stock.

Thanks Jim! I knew this conversion could be done I just wasn't sure of the details. Your help much appreciated.

As others have pointed out, the actions are identical. Best solution is to buy a Boyd's Barracuda laminated free float stock ($160) and a bottom metal kit from Midway ($60).

Thanks bobcat ! Any recommendations for a barrel source ?? Looks like Green Mountain makes only .22 cal. BBl's. And the Lilja 17HMR's are carry a hefty price. BTW the barracuda seems to be for the 10/22 only but there are several several laminate choices around for the 77/22, 77/17 actions.

I may have been incorrect on the stock name, I just remember that they do make one for the 77/22 action (It looks just like the Barracuda).
Beyers makes aluminum shrouds and Volquartsen makes carbon fiber. Same weight, same price. Volquartsen does not list 77/22 barrels on their website, but they still have a few left in inventory. Just call and ask.
I believe Green Mountain only makes steel barrels that weigh 3 times as much as aluminum or carbon fiber. It's been a few weeks since I looked, I could be wrong about that.
Also, the weight/price difference depends on your intended use.

agreed ! I'm looking at the Lothar-Walther bbls. .......... .920" 21.5" chrome molly & stnls. $175.00 & $190.00 Clark Custom uses these. A friend has had excellent results with these barrels. I'll be going with the Boyd's 77/17 Pro-varmint. I like the classic look :)

Just fond another re-barrel option for 77/22.

Aluma-Lite offers several options and they are the only maker I found so far that offers a light weight 22MAG replacement for the 77/22. Their barrels weigh a bit more (24oz vs 13oz), but that's still half the weight of a factory barrel for those like myself who are more into stalking/hunting that target shooting.
