Rebarreling a 308 to 284 Winchester (Heavy bullets, 180gr)

I have a Howa 1500 308 with 22" barrel. I would like to rebarrel it to 284 Winchester or 284 Shehane (most likely choice) with 30" heavy barrel. Option: threaded barrel with a recessed muzzle crown
I would be shooting the rifle with 180-190gr Heavy High BC heavy bullets
What barrel blank do you recommend, and who is the Gunsmith that you do recommend?

I am willing to wait for 10-12 weeks total before the rifle is back.

Don't know where you are. But Dan Dowling in Palisade, Co can do the job.
If you can get a Krieger Heavy Palma barrel from Bug holes .30 cal 1-10 twist
if you have the barrel and just want it rebarreled, He can do the job probably in less than 30 days

Gun Smith Two offhand Randy Gregory Wis. or Jeremy Smith Oregon.
Barrel 30'' HV SS Brux 1-8.5 Twist ( any barrel now 4-6 months out. Straight .284 using .284 Laupa Brass ( Reamer to Match). 180 HB Bergers.

You do known .284 are in the short Barrel Life Family ? Shehane Fire Forming will eat half the Barrel

I shoot F/Class and have a fair idea ????
Good Luck

I think he will want a 7mm blank for a 284. I would recommend a 9 twist
Its what I use in my Comp Rifles and works well in a 30 or 32 inch.
I dont know what the Op is planing on shooting, ...just for fun or Competitions.
For fun, shooting steel targets all the way to 1000 yards. Plan B, sell the rifle, advised by the wife.

Thank you, I will discard the Shehane improvement, and save on custom dies, custom reamer, and fire forming, thank you again.

Do you single load with the 180s Bergers? What is the COAL with those bullets?

My bad, was thinking he wanted a .308. Still look at Bugholes for a barrel in stock.

If I keep this rifle and rebarrel to 284, I would have to modify the magazine/lower frame to accept a COAL of 2.955". I already did this modification to my Semi Custom Savage SA, 6.5 PRC, 30" heavy barrel.

I understand the best for the heavy 7mm bullets is to use a long action

I don't know if Tikka does actions like Remington does or not. But if they do i would not want a short action Remington in 284, and it sounds like thats what you are trying to do with a short action tikka. When i built my 6.5-284 I found with heavy bullets it would not work well as the bullet would be way back in the case to work in a short action. i built mine on a long action and have had not bullet length related issues.

I wish you the best of luck in finding any brand of 180s.

In the last month, I have received 2000 Berger 180gr. Hybrids that I had on back order from a number of different suppliers. They are out there, you just have to be patient.

Hard to be patient when you have a new build and only a few bullets.

Not sure I'd waste my time trying to get a 180-190 bullet in a 284 case for an OAL of 2.955. My short action 284 running 162s are at an OAL of 2.980 and about as short as I'd want to go with the 162 for performance. Long action is the way to go for anything heavier than 168 grain bullets IMO.
