Rebarreling a 308 to 284 Winchester (Heavy bullets, 180gr)

Lots of gunsmiths capable of a good barreling job. The biggest obstacle is finding a barrel and then add the gunsmith's work to meet your timeline.

Not sure I'd waste my time trying to get a 180-190 bullet in a 284 case for an OAL of 2.955. My short action 284 running 162s are at an OAL of 2.980 and about as short as I'd want to go with the 162 for performance. Long action is the way to go for anything heavier than 168 grain bullets IMO.
Your advice and your experience with the SA 284 are appreciated.
This is why I posted this thread.
Thanks for sharing your thought.

For fun, shooting steel targets all the way to 1000 yards. Plan B, sell the rifle, advised by the wife.
Why are you discussing a rifle build with our wife? ..jeez!

You realize you are going from a 4000 round barrel life to a 1000 round barrel life, eh?

Because she does not mind getting involved. She is a shooter, has her own firearms and wants to be a pistol shooting instructor for her female friends.

Yep, I do. However, I like very accurate long range rifles. Another option which could be very feasible but nonetheless a barrel burner too is either 22 CrdM or 25 CrdM. I reload and shoot for the 6CrdM and so getting a rifle in CrdM+ or CrdM- is an option

My Tikka mag has .100 extra room ahead of the nose, with 180 VLD's seated .010" off the lands.

I have built a couple 284's on my custom Tikka actions, with Kreiger barrels, and they hang with my midrange rifles. Can't go wrong.

Any Tikka action with the right bolt face will work. You change the action length by replacing the bolt stop. I did a 284 on a Tikka by rebarreling a 6.5 CM and changing out the bolt stop to make it a long action. I also faced the receiver and added a Remington-style recoil lug. It shoots awseome.

On a short action, the 284 works well with a Shehane case and a 0.050" freebore. The added case capacity about offsets the lost capacity from deep seating required. I have a few freinds that did that. Its a lot of work and not my speed, but if you have a SA and want a 284 that will push heavies, it will work.
