Rebarrel quandry

I purchased a .284 heavy barrel to mate with a Rem 700 action. The issue; the barrel has 1.062 x 18 thd and the action is 1.062 x 16. I planned to rechamber the 30" barrel, as in staying with the .284 chambering and moving the chamber forward enough to rethread the tenon. I realize the simple solution would be to spend the bucks and buy a compatible 700 clone action but I've already bought the Rem 700 LA. I am wondering if it would be possible to rethread the action simply by chasing the existing 16 tpi threads with a 18 tpi tap? How much strength would I give up? Other options?
The barrel only has 600 rounds down the tube and barrel scope shows virtually no erosion so I really hate to touch the chamber.

In re-threading/chambering you may extend the useful life to boot as you will be cutting out about .70" of throat. Keep your action as is and you will thank yourself the next time you put a barrel on it.

I thank all, and I agree. I just wondered how much tensile strength would be lost in that rethreading process. And yes, I'll continue with my original plan and move the chamber forward.

Ever tried threading a metric nut on a bolt? thats whats gonna happen but way worse. Your gonna ruin both the action threads and the barrel threads.

Listen to the smarter people just set that Bit$h back and be done with it. No reason to ruin the action.
