Rebarrel my 243 win 30 deg to 6ppc or 6br?

I bought a nice br rifle with bat action, nice stock, trigger, etc. It is unfired at this time. After I bought the rifle I started to read a few books on benchrest and they pretty much have me convinced to rebarrel (or rechamber if possible) my rifle to 6ppc or 6br.

My chamber is a 243 win improved with a 30 degree shoulder and the barrel is a kreiger hv 4 groove 27.5".

On the plus side for keeping it 243 I have about 500 pieces of new lapua brass. On the downside I have to have custom dies made and I will have an "oddball" caliber. It seems like there is much more data out there for the ppc and br.

What am I looking at cost wise to convert it?

Bat, if you plan to actually compete in BR the 6 PPC is much better than the 6BR in that arena. Most of the "score" shooters (mostly IBS) today are using the 30BR but a few PPCs show up. Group shooters (mostly NBRSA) still use the 6 PPC almost exclusively.

I have a BAT-actioned 30BR and it is wonderful. If you want to shoot for fun, maybe some Egg Shoots, etc., I like the 6BR but it will not match the pure BR accuracy of the 6 PPC.

Depending what you want to do with it,not knowing what chamber it is call the smith that chambered it. See what it is, maybe if lucky it may be a 6 superLR and you can get dies or rechamber to it....jim

That may be a 6CM, it has a 31 degree shoulder.
David Bruno has chambered the majority of them.

The rifle was built by Steve Rorick, Inland Accuracy Lab in Riverside, CA. The chamber looks like this. It looks like 6PPC is out of the question for me due to the size of the bolt face. Maybe I would be better off selling this one and buying something else?

you'll need to post a little more info to get better responses. First, is this for long range or short range? We're assuming it will be used for short range since you're tossing around the idea of a PPC chamber, but we could be wrong. That 243 improved chamber will work very well for 1k BR... I wouldn't change it if you're planning on using it for that purpose. What twist is the barrel?

If you decide to rechamber for PPC you can have a bushing installed in your bolt face to work on the PPC case head.

Here's what I wouldn't do... Sell the entire rig and buy a new one.
What I would do... use what you have, sell off the parts you don't want (the barrel), and buy a barrel and reamer for the cambering you want. Or, you can keep everything you have, buy addition things (bolt and barrel) and have a switch-barrel setup... good for shooting short and long range with one gun.

Our local club has a 600yd range but I would mostly be shooting 100-300.

The bolt face will be .473 so it would work for a PPC. but what twist is it? You need that before you go any further. The throat looks short for the 105 bullets,you may get lucky. if you want to set it back,it would be a BR and sell the cases or trade for BR cases.......jim

Unless the current barrel's shot out, I don't know why you're replacing it. If you're dead set on replacing it, the 6MM SLR delivers the performance of a .243 and should give you a little better barrel life.

It has never been fired so I was just thinking I would get started off on the right foot instead of shooting an oddball caliber.

The twist on your existing barrel will determine what you need to do.

Since you've now explained that you're mainly shooting 100 to 300 yards, I can now tell you this...

If it's an 8-twist barrel - sell it and get yourself a 12 or 14 twist barrel chambered in 6br or 6ppc, or the like. You could even change cal and go to a 30BR!
If the twist is slower than 8 (like 12 or 14) - rechamber the barrel for 6br, 6ppc, or the like.

Both above options will work great for ranges up to 600 yards as well, but the wind might get you a bit at 600 yards with the lighter bullets.

that's what I would do, but that's just me... hopefully we can give you enough info here to make the correct/best decision.

If your barrel is a 8.5 to 8 tw it would be a very good long range gun. Other guy may know more about die. I would give this round a go if it was mine. You could load this with 6BR F/L "S" die ( size the neck and bump the shoulder like I do my 6BRX)and seater, I'm not sure what die would work on the base, I use a 308 f/l die for my base on the 6BRX. You want get may be $250.00 or so out of the barrel, and it is a $500.00 barrel. It could be cut and rechamber to 6BR. Or just add a 6BR barrel.

It would cost more to rechamber than getting a die.but you still need to know the twist rate of the barrel. If you do rechamber or re barrel, you still have to buy a Dies........jim

If all your wanting to shoot is 100-300 yards, I would swap out the barrel if it is a slow twist barrel. If your shooting 1-300, go with ppc. Anything beyond 300, I would go with 6br or an improved version of it. Check on some of the match reports for benchrest matches. See what others are shooting.

Slice it down and make it a great 6br or brx. Heres a better idea, cut down the barrel make it a 6br and then get another barrel that is a fast twist for 1-300 yards. That way you have the do it all round and one set of dies. Or sell the barrel and get another one.

You have a twist for the 115's and a short throat, doesn't work any way you go except to cut off the threads and rechamber to dasher with a long throat of at least .136 free bore. You could set it back just about .250 and chamber superLR with .120 free bore ......jim

have Hornady make you set of dies , and shot it for a bit !
i have a .243 with 30deg it shoots grate , i was fire froming same acse to to day with 107 mk and 44gr of aa 3100
groups where .5 ish just off bi pode at 100m
vel was 3150 to 3200 fps

by the why dies only cost $145 + p&p
