Win 70 Rebarrel

Definitely going to rebarrel, cant decide on a caliber. 6.5 creedmoor or 7mm-08 or always wanted a 284 win? I have to consider recoil and I do have a 7SAUM but I like the 7mms...

If your rifle is one of the short action calibers, built with a standard (long) action, the 284 would get my vote. Even if it's a short action, I'd still do it. (Says the man with 284 dies and cases, but no 284 :D )

Seems like I've got seven M70s. Maybe eight; I'd have to look....

They run from push feed, to classic. 220 Swift, 223, 243, 6mmbr, 260, 280, and 30-06. Only three have factory barrels- two 223 and the 243.

Were the rebarrels worth it? To me and whoever inherits, it is.

ETA: Nine... forgot the one waaaay back in the safe.

It is a SA, however I modified the hinged floor plate mag box by taking the spacer out of the back and have 3.050" inside length now. I noticed that the ejection port is also larger when compared to a Rem 700 SA. Not sure how the fatter 284 case would feed off of the rails?

Be a good question for a gunsmith, however, the 284 started life as a short action round.....

243 and 284. I did just feed the 284 dummy round out of my 243 Classic's magazine (it is too long the actually close the bolt over, and fit into). It is a true short action. The bolt lifted the round out of the magazine and properly positioned it within the claw, the chamber stopped the round.

My dummy round measures 3.138 COAL. I didn't mark it at the time, but I'm reasonably sure it is a 168gr VLD Hunting. Boatail is seated at the neck shoulder junction.

Are you sure that's not a 180 VLD? Curious I was figuring COALs based on some numbers with the 284 cartridge diagram and the Berger QRS.
Assuming your 70 classic is a hinged floor plate controlled feed, if it is that's a good sign if you are feeding off the rails. I think I can get the inside of the box to ~3.1" which would leave me the ~3.050" max, not bad and even would be beneficial with a 260 option.

Yeah, I don't have any 180s....

7-08 is one of the best all-around cartridges for hunting and target shooting. I worked one over for a guy a couple of years ago, and shot a mid-0.3's 5 shot group with it, without any serious load workup, and this was a stock hunting rifle with a hunting scope. Most deer will fall cooperatively to a 120 gr bullet, and you've got the heavies for longer range. I don't have one, but it's what I would have if I was starting over. When I started shooting and hunting, 600 yards was a mythical distance for most shooters, and certainly for hunters. Come to think of it, 600 yards is still a poke. I'd opt for a varmint weight 26" barrel, about 0.8-0.825" at the muzzle. That should also feed OK from a long action. One disadvantage of the CRPF Win action is that the barrels require an extractor cut, which adds about $75 to the installation cost.

I had to Bush my 6BR. Blew 60% of the primers from 23gr of Varget up to 30. Bushed it and zero since.

I don't understand or I am just lucky ? I have loaded my 6mmBR up to 30.4 gr of Varget, and 29.6 N140 2880 fps as well as factory small primer ammo on my 1912 Steyr Mauser Model 98. Uh, what's the problem with firing pins and bushings ?

I believe the Mausers HEAVY firing pin assembly ( FP, spring , cocking piece ) along with its energy ( weight plus long fall ) will prevent primer extrusion . Just a guess of course.
I applaud you choice of receivers . I also have one in 6 BR , 6 pPC , 22 ppc , 22 br , and a few more short fat cartridges currently in vogue .
