Reassembling a 10-22 bolt in the receiver?

Disassembly is easy, but I have a devil of a time getting the bolt back in place and getting the spring compressed to exactly the right spot for the bolt to drop down on the bolt handle / crosshead. I know it's cocked when I hold it back by the handle, but haven't figured how to hold it straight from the inside.

Is there a trick or a tool that helps? This is my first 10-22, and I take it apart to get all the crud out of the inside of the receiver and off the bolt nose and the spring / guide rod. There must be an easier way than the way I do it. I average rasslin' with it for at least 5 minutes every time.

Thanks, Tom

I compress the spring with the bolt handle THEN put the bolt in over it and it on goes smoothly.

Might try that.

Traveler, I did a poor job of describing the sequence, but that's how I've done it, but holding it back with the handle cocks it and takes me several tries to get it just right.

Thanks Dave. I'll see if I can find them. I'm computer illiterate, and still think that they're just a fad that won't catch on.

Gunsmith, as soon as I log off, I'm going to his website.

I knew there had to be some kind of tool for doing this. I can't believe that Ruger craftsmen would 'rassle with the thing hundreds of times a day. I'll bet they have something similar.

The extractor removal and reinstaller pins are a nice addition.

Thanks for the link, Tom

Just ordered 2 of the bolt/extractor combination tools from Gunsmither. If anyone is interested in seeing how easy this job can be made, check out the website and video.

The tool would be simple to make, but time-consuming to adjust the angles and lengths. At his price of $12.95 + $3.50 shipping and handling, it makes a lot more sense to just buy them.

Thanks again, Tom

I got the tool in and used it after a range session. Disassembly was never difficult, but the tool makes that easier too. For some reason, the front of my bolt barely clears the back of the rails inside the receiver. It has to be removed by lifting the back up and pulling it out backwards. Reinstalling it is very tight, but using the tool to hold the bolt bar/handle square with the receiver and all the way back only took me a minute or less to get it to snap down on the bar, remove the tool, push it down all the way and close the bolt. I will probably get faster after I use it more, but it's already worth the money.
