Reason to chose Sb die over standard

Recently got a 268 neck 6 br barrel with a rifle purchase. All I have is a standard fl redding 6br sizer. I'm planning on getting the wilson fl sizer. I see they have a "match" sb fl die? Is there any reason this is beneficial over a standard fl bushing die?

If the SB stands for small base, the small base die comes in handy when you have "clickers" or ejection issue's. you may never have that issue or you might. I have a small base die for most of the stuff I load for. I do not use it unless there is a need.

It is likely that eventually you will have cases that will not chamber because the base has expanded. I have that situation now with my 6 BR. If you only resize the base when it is needed, it introduces a variable. Sometimes the base of the case is a different size. If you push the case a little deeper into the die you change the shoulder bump and other parameters.

Neck sizing has the same issue. Eventually you will need to bump the shoulder and resize more of the case.

That is why I don't neck size and use a SB sizing die. With a neck bushing of course. LOL

So now I'm back into the sb die camp for consistency sake. Lol

I have to agree with Steve about variables however I usually don’t get clickers with my 6 br and variants of until late in the life of the brass, at that point it’s just a bandaid and will need done each time. At that point I use a .308 sb die until I have time to prep another batch of brass.

Wayne's reply really hits the nail on the head. With the 308 die you will never have to worry about unintentional shoulder bump.

Unless the reamer was worn out, and a standard FL die doesn't work that well, there is no reason for a small base die.

If it works with a regular FL sizing die then there is no need for a small base die, for it will work the brass more than necessary.

At the same, a little bit of body expansion during firing can alleviate some pressure...

Try a 45 acp die

Been using a Redding FL S die with bushings for 15 years. Never needed a SB die. If your enlarging the base area your probably shooting safe but hot loads. I have about 20 reloads on my cases without a problem. Eric Cortina and many other top shooters recommend nothing but FL bushing dies (see his video on sizing). The only question I see is do you want to send them a few fired cases and have the die made to your fired case requirements.

Just my thoughts, but I was under the impression that on a AR platform the brass should be resized using a SB die due to the brass not fully seated in the chamber due to the base not sized to the correct case size.

Had this issue with my .308 AR and using a standard resizing die. Went to a SB die and issues went away.

The selector only time I use my sb die is to size to once fire brass from someone else's rifle. Mostly before making 20P and 6x45mm from range brass.
