RE23 and RE26

I am using RE26 in my 7mm Rem Mag and getting the Berger 168gr to just over 3100fps with no pressure sign yet.

I messed with 23 in a 25-06ai and wasn't too impressed with it in that chambering, trying 26 in a 300 ackley now and had the 210s at 3200 today out of a 26" barrel w/o pressure.

Try 26 in the 06.

Retumbo is showing promise, if it poops the bed I may take that advice and load up some 26.

I just loaded some 139 Interlocks over Re23 to test in my 7 mag. I just need some decent weather to step out to my range. Report to follow.

Got to do some shooting today. My rifle is a Savage action with a 26-inch Criterion barrel on it. Here are some of my results using Reloder 23 powder. COAL was pretty much Nolser book.

I started off with 68 grains under 139 Hornady Interlocks. 68 grains produced 3227 fps and a 3/4-inch group for four shots with a fifth opening the group to one inch.
66 grains clocked 3126 fps and dropped down to under 1/2 inch group for three shots. Sub-half-minute is normal for this rifle with this bullet and Re 22.

Nosler 140 AB was the next test. 68 grains produced 3244 fps with marginal accuracy of one inch plus. 66 grains dropped the group to around 3/4 inches at 3155 fps. Reloder 22 worked a little better with this bullet.

The Nosler 140 Partition was the last test. It produced velocities similar to the AB, but the accuracy was not good. Trying loads from 64 to 68 grains produced groups in the two inch range for the most part. I had two groups that were 3/4 -ish and then one bad flyer. Overall, not a good powder choice for this bullet. I shot a few with IMR 4831 and got down to one inch easily. I have not shot these much and more testing is necessary before I pass judgment on them in my rifle.

This is by no means a thorough test, but overall, I think that Reloder 23 is a good replacement for 22 for the most part. With the 139 Hornadys, I got 3126 fps velocity with 23 using 66 grains vs 3100 using 66.7 grains of 22. Accuracy was comparable.

I prefer to keep velocities around 3100 fps for the 140-class bullets. This is my deer/antelope rifle and at that velocity, the Hornadys do a fantastic job on those animals. It is a bit easier on the rifle, too, I am sure. I step up to 160 Partitions in a Remington for elk and prefer Re 25 for that job.

I have tried a few loads with R26:
243 AI 26" with 105 vld's it will easily reach the same vel. I get with 4831 sc but doesn't group as well.

280 AI 26" just a few tested so far it will push 180 vld's to 2850 fps with no over pressure signs

7 wsm 24" so far at 2915 fps less than max loads. ( this is the cartridge I bought the r26 for)
