Re using a Rivetless Extractor

I need to replace a magnum extractor. I removed the old one because it would fail to extract sometimes. Had ordered replacements but they did not specify the size. It was standard size.
So my question is, can it be used again? I put it back in but it just flops around in the bolt face. Is there some way, until I find a replacement, to expand the extractor to fit so I can shoot the rifle? I realize that if I try to pull the ends apart it will most likely break. Can you un temper it, pull the ends apart and them re harden it? I know this sounds "risky" but I am desperate.

Sounds like the "spring" has sprung. This is just a suggestion as you are running out of options. Open the ends to the size it needs to be, heat to a cherry red and then quench in oil, used motor oil maybe. This may put the temper back in and make it springy again. A Google search on how to make metal springy might be helpful. There is also the possibilty that you may harden too much and it becomes brittle. Refer to Google search above or maybe a YouTube video. Just a suggestion.

Is there a youtube on this?
Some of you guys google foo is week. Took all of 30 seconds to find it ;)

Not sure he shows the detail very well. He does mention not reusing an extractor. I have but if you bent it taking it out it’s probably junk. You wind them in (and out) through the cutout into the groove like you’re trying to twist a spring into place.

What action?
Remington 700

700 Magnum extractors are riveted, not spring type.
PTG has some https://pacifictoolandgauge.com/mis...actor-remington-magnum-single-rivet-type.html

Don't know who has the rivets. They are specific to case size, magnum being the shortest.
Numrich has .473 dia. repos.
You could shorten one to work in the magnum.
You'll also need a riveting tool.
