re: Purpose of the Nationals

Y’all are in luck!!! We just discussed this very thing at the winter meeting and everyone is working to make this happen! The 300 yard tack driver challenge is what it’s been referred to and keep the dates open in the middle of November of this year!

Deer season may not be the best time to have a new match but, ya gotta do what you can, when ya can. I understand that. Ky deer gun season comes in on the 2nd Saturday of November every year. Tn is similar but not sure of exact dates. I know it's longer than ours, though.
This match isn't alone here. Lots of matches struggle to compete with deer season around here.

Come on Mike, don’t start back pedaling over deer season yet, save that for closer to the match ;)

Todd what would the format be...

Still a lot to work out but the initial thought is 3 300 yard score targets and 3 300 yard group targets. Bring whatever you want and at the end of the day the “Tack Driver” is awarded.

Any SAFE rifle allowed, rests, bipods, sand bags, rolled up blankets, papa’s 270 Winchester, whatever you think you can win with in one place at the same time.....can you imagine the fun we’re going to have?

Sounds like fun but I will be hunting in the middle of November. That's almost a certainty. Maybe another KY Mafia member will be more interested. I wish you the best and it should be a fun match.

not true.
it has liberal biased score rings.
for people that cannot RUN WHAT THEY BRUNG.
Apparently, you've not tried it yet. If you had, you'd know that there is no handicap when there is no advantage given to any caliber.
You're free to have your opinion but first, let's talk about where you compete. If you've tried ubr and didn't like it, at least you have an informed opinion. If not, it's just an opinion.

I cannot see ubr in any "ultimate" CHALLENGE.
it is a handicap game, not a rifle /shooter match.

Completely disagree. It is not a handicap game. In the traditional score game you are handicapping yourself by shooting a 6mm or God forbid a .22 on a IBS score target.

If anything UBR levels the playing field and highlights shooter skill over caliber selection. It allows you to show up with a caliber other than a 30BR and still win the day if the shooter is up to the challenge. The targets don’t provide an advantage based on caliber selection so in my eyes it’s all about the shooter.

I hate it when people come on here and run down other shooting disciplines. UBR is a great format with some top notch shooters dedicated to the craft.

Sounds like your a 30br shooter. Fun round I have shot one. What the .30 BR did in the score game was make mediocre shooters competitive. Thing I have noticed the .30BR folks tend to go away when you talk more than 200 yds. I have won matchs that go to 500 with 30 BR but you certianly give something up at that distance with it. On the other hand it sure helps a less than optimum shot at 100 or 200 find the 10 ring or the dot. So dont knock the UBR style just because it places the emphisis on the shooter ability not a fat hole. Funny, I was shooting IBS when the 30BR came about and at the same time or shortly there after shooter numbers declined. If you short range , 100 and 200 yd, guys want t.o know the best shooter on a given day, do it like long range matches do that have a winner each relay and they shoot off against each other at the end. Same conditions for all and you can't get lucky once and win.

The issue with the shoot off as I see it is some have a good relay they are in and if others don't there out on that day at that place. do it over a couple of different days at a couple of different ranges and different disciplines and that will give you who the real shooter is. just my take on it, if no one is interested thats fine. all can beat on their chest and talk crap about being the best but in the end when the gauntlet was thrown down you didn't step up.

I do like the idea and would like to see more crossover with shooters between disciplines. Matches like Todd mentioned are a good start. Best I can do is to attend some of each this season. I plan to shoot UBR mostly but I have a few nbrsa group shoots on my calendar and I might be able to make the ibs 100/200 score nationals, but that one is questionable due to other match conflicts at about the same time. If I had enough time and money, I'd shoot matches about every weekend and practice during the week between. IME, they are all great games made up of great people in each, UBR, group and score.

It would be nice to see more group shooters cross over and shoot some UBR with their existing rifles. They could do the same with other score matches but that .065"(.308-.243=.065) is a lot to leave on the table in today's game. It pretty much means a new barrel at the least and likely a complete new rifle to shoot one discipline, whereas UBR and group can be done with either, as can those guys cross over to shoot UBR without building new equipment just to give it a serious try. Unfortunately, there seems to be animosity between all sanctioning bodies, preventing some from crossing over and trying the other venues. I've been there too but it's a shame that keeps some from shooting great br games with fine folks in all major disciplines.

Whatever can be done to help get shooters to all matches, or simply try something else br related..is a good thing. Keep up the good work!
