re-chamber options

I'm currently shooting a Rem. 700 action with a Broughton 5-c 1-8" twist bbl. 28.50' long in 6XC. It was "long throated" from the very beginning, using a Hugh H. reamer, and now with less than 900 rounds down the tube I can't get 105 VLD or LT bullets to touch the lands. I use this rifle for 600-1K competitions, and the barrel is shooting to well to scrap at this point, so can someone give me some ideas on another cartridge to re-chamber in?

I agree with Catshooter. Set it back, use the same reamer and go back to shootin'. You might explore a change in powder. Some powders are harder on throats than others.

There in lies the problem. The reamer I have available to me cuts the throat to long. So, the question is, do I get a different reamer or switch to another cartridge?

Catshooter,I really do I like the cartridge. The problem is my "smith" only has the reamer that he used to do the current bbl. If I have it set back, I'm right back where I started in another 800-900 rounds, assuming it's not shot out. Now for DocEd, I've been using RL-15, as it shoots little tiny groups regardless of temp. etc. Do you consider this a "hard" powder on the throats??

Kittywacker is right. I will throw out another option for you. I also have a 6XC and I am at 1600rds or so in mine. My problem is I love the caliber but just don't feel it has the horsepower for 1000yds on steel and I want to shoot the heavier 115 or maybe even a 117, if my barrel will stabalize the 117s.

What I decided to do is to go with Robert Whitleys 243XC or maybe he calls it the 6MMsuperX but what it is is the 243 case run into a 6XC die that has a .120 shim under it. This gives you an over grown 6XC or 6BR case or a 243 with a nice 30 degree shoulder and a longer neck.

When I talked to Pacific about a reamer they said they sell a lot of them and it makes a really nice round. Plus you can use the dies you already have. You simply need a .120 shim for your die and imperal sizing wax and just run the case up in the die and thats it your ready to go.

SO for you, you can have your reamer done for $140 and you won't need to buy any other dies or as Kittywacker said you can just buy another 6XC reamer to your specs if your happy with it now.

The more info that comes to light, the better the Whitley SuperX sounds.
1.I would have the advantage of top end Lapua brass, something not available in 6XC.
2.Fabricating a .120 shim would cost me nothing.
3.I can use my existing dies,no additional cost)
4.Would have that advantage of additional powder capacity and the ability to use slower burning single based powders.,Thanks Joe)
Those are the positives; can anyone think of any negatives? Ya know, there are always two sides to a coin.

The guy I talked to at Pacific has two rifle chambered in the 243XC and really likes them. Its a sound simple idea. I am going to really look at the new 6.5creedmoor for a future replacement for my 260 when that day comes. Once again a 30 degree shoulder and longer neck with only one gr. of water difference for case volume.

Most shooters assume that when chambering for a VLD bullet you need more throat when, usually, you need less simply because of the long ogive. It lets the meplat of the bullet stick up into the bore long before the bullet will touch the lands. There are more 6PPC shooters experimenting with '0' freebore these days.
