Re chamber 7RM

Have a second hand 7RM coming to me very soon, but was just wandering if I don't like it what options are open to get it rebarreled to something else, and what processes are involved?

I will mainly use this rifle for foxing (in a very windy area) and deer shooting (with some long range target shooting also).

The rifle in question is a Rem 700, 24" barrel.

If you decide to rebarrel it, the gunsmith bill for a setback and rechamber is going to be the same as if you rebarrel it to start (barrel cost is the only change in price).

Personally, if you're going to occasionally shoot long range and shoot deer and foxes with it, I think you're going to find that 7mm RM WAY overkill for it.

Keeping the same Mag bolt face you might think about one of the short mags like the SAUM or WSM series in 7mm. You can load them light for good range on a small animal like a fox, you can stoke it a little harder for deer, and you can pour on the coals and shoot distance with heavy bullets seated long in the case.

Personally, unless you're doing the work yourself I would not have that factory barrel rechambered. I'm planning to take a 243 barrel and open it up to a 6mm Rem AI, but the barrel was given to me as a take-off with about 1000 rounds down the tube. I want to try the 6 AI a little before I go off and spend the $300 on a Bartlein or a Brux, and I'm doing the work myself so I think it makes sense in my situation.

I would not advocate such a path if you're paying someone else to make the chips for you.

That 7mm RM will do anything you ask of it, and unless the barrel has been shot out there really is no need to rechamber it... With that big bolt face you'll have very little to choose from that will do any better than what it already is...
If your going to be shooting small critters with it, download it with H or IMR-4895 and a light weight bullet and have right at it....

Surely the bolt face is different on a RM to a WSM?

The larger 7mm is intended for when the wind is blowing hard....

Thanks for the replies

Bolt faces are the same, which opens up all kinds of possibilities in a re-barrel, but......

A 7 mag may be mundane these days, but do one up in a good tube and it still offers up a-hell-of-a-lot.
