RCBS Uniflow drum/insert volume

Anybody happen to know offhand the relative volume ranges of the large and small diameter drum/inserts for the Uniflow measures?

TIA,

If you mean the large & small drum without the micrometer inserts, IIRC the large would throw charges up to approx 115 grains while the small went up to about 55 grains. The small drum was discontinued about 1990 +/-.

Ray,

The small drum is still currently cataloged at Midway... maybe I'm looking at the wrong parts?

You're right. I looked at my Midway catalog and there it is. Either Midway is making them or RCBS started again after Huntington's sold out. Either way, they say 110 grains for the large and 50 for the small, which is just about as I remembered it. As I remember, using the micrometer insert, either RCBS or Redding) took up just a tiny bit more space and reduced the capacity, although not enough to worry about. Maybe a grain or two at the most.

Ray,

For cartridges in the range of a .223 Rem,~25gr powder) to a .308 Win,~45gr powder) do you think a person would be better off with the smaller drum? IIRC I have a large drum w/ the micrometer... someone suggested to me that I might get somewhat more consistent charges using the smaller drum with the lower charge weights. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Here's what I call the "drum". I switched to the micrometer insert more than 10 years ago, before Harrell made his measures and I could not afford a Bruno or the other expensive ones. I used it in point-blank Benchrest and it threw very consistent charges for me. Most of my charges were around 30 to 35 grains weight. I even used it for bigger cartridges like the 244 Ackley by simply throwing two charges, each one being 1/2 of the total.

I gave it to my grandson about 5 years ago. To tell the truth, I can't remember if I set it up with the small or large drum. Probably the small. The one pictured here is what I had left over. Does it look like the large?? The hole is about .685" diameter.

From what I remember seeing on Midway's site... .685 would be the large. Can't get there from here right now but I think the small is more like 0.500?
