RCBS Trim Pro Power Trimmer 110 Volt

Found it new for $251. Is it worth the money? With the Trim Pro 3-Way Cutter, will it do a good enough job to prep brass for competition shooting?

;D
The Lee trimming tools will do the job just fine for under $30, ;)

I use the RCBS 3-way trimmer head, best that I've used....it was the only 3-way on the market at the time I was mass producing Match preped brass for myself.

The GOOD point is you don't have to buy a complete head for each caliber, they sell just the pilot for them now, I think arouond $12 or so.......

I made my own powered RCBS Trimmer, I used a standard power drill (you'll need a 1/2" chuck unless you have a lathe to turn down the shaft end) and used a foot switch from a Singer Sewing Machine to control the drill motor.

It's trims to consistent length and best I can tell it cuts true/square. I use the 3-way cutting head for both .308 and .223. For .223 it works great. Hit the necks with a brush and they're ready to load straight out of the trimmer. For .308 I've never been able to get it adjusted just right. It's close but for my competition rounds I still touch up chamfer with hand tool. Still saves me the deburring step and chamfer touch up is just a couple of turns of the tool.

I've been using one for the last 6-7 years and it works well. The 3-way cutters can be a little tough to get set up at first, but once they are locked down they stay in place and shouldn't require adjustment. I keep one set up for .22, .30 and 6mm. It's easy to adjust the machine for different cartridges - I just keep a "reference" casing nearby that is trimmed to the proper length for each caliber I trim. When I switch calibers, I just unplug the trimmer, load the reference casing in and set the length by that.

The RCBS is probably not as fast as the Giraud, but it's pretty fast and trims nicely. OAL's are very repeatable with the machine. If I were starting from scratch I might look into getting the Giraud instead, but with as much as I have into this one I'll just stick with it. I think the Giraud would be about 2x the cost with conversions for all of the calibers I trim.

Good luck,
Erik

This post in January had some additional points regarding the RCBS.

There are also some Youtube posts where people show a power drill conversion of a basic RCBS trimmer that be a cheaper option.
