RCBS charge master combo?

Has anyone had issue with the Charge master combo not holding zero? I left my charge master on for a few days just to make sure it was warmed up as i have heard this can be a fix.

I calibrated it with the weights, everything calibrated fine.

Throw a powder charge a XXgr then move on to another and the weight will jump around some times as much as .5gr? Pull the powder tray and set it back on the scale and its a different number all together?

Seems like the scale it not holding a Zero weight or something. I know send it back to RCBS but this is the second time this has happend to it. I sent i back the first time and everything was great for awhile. Now its starting to act up again. Anyone have this problem before?

Only Mod that i did to the charge master was installed a reducing insert in the tip of the powder dispensing tube to get better metering of the powder. Which works great i might add.

When I had a similar problem, I talked with RCBS Tech Support since it was under warrantee at the time. They said to wipe it down with a Anti Static cloth like you use in a clothes dryer. No more problems like that. I just wipe it down every few months.

I have this problem frequently. Dryer sheets do work to get rid of the static. Make sure you wipe everything down, trays, weights etc. This usually fixes the problem for a while. Seems some days the static is worse than others.

I guess the powder dispensing causes the static. I have a 15 year old RCBS scale made by Pact. It is very dependable and repeatable. Never had a problem.

For match loads I use the CM to dispense the powder charge, but then transfer it to a beam scale and correct any deviation. Just don't trust the scale anymore.

I am on RCBS Charge Master #6 and 7. The first one was great, I talked with tec and reprogramed the timing sequences and it both was more accurate and faster. After about 4 years is died and they replaced it. I bought a second unit and it went back to RCBS after one day. The replacement lasted about a month and it went back. I bought another unit while waiting on the earlier replacement to be replaced for a second time. I now have two working units. One does not work well below 60 degrees. Florescent lights also effect them. I am now using LED lighting. When they work well they are hard to beat. When they don't work they suck.

.300WbyMag,

Not only are the scales sensitive to draughts, they are sensitive to fluorescent lighting. Use incansdescent, LED, etc... lighting to get rid of the 60 Hz buzz.

Phil that is too funny! Yeah we are hurting for water out here its terrible. I have this setup in my spare bedroon using incandesecent lighting so its not a lighting issue. The static issue is one i have never heard before im going to go home and try this when im off work. Thanks everyone for your help.

Gday,
I had same issuies whith my lynman a couple of years ago it was my mobile phone making it drift.
Then oneday I forgot I sat it on the bench when setting up and while dispensing loads it rang
and the lynman went awol and never recovered so I cut it in half and used it as a trickler.

I run two of them... i find myself recalibrating every so often during use and every time before use... mine only varies .1 though not more than that... but .1 is plenty for me to not be happy, so i recalibrate...

Yes lighting and wind can make a diff for sure, didnt know about the static, ill have to try doing that, may be my problem.. interesting...

They aint perfect in every way, buy they sure beat trickinging by hand and a beam scale.. until i find a way better combo unit ill keep them...

If you want to cure the static problem for longer periods of time use an anti-static spray.

Here's a simple DIY solution that uses fabric softener liquid, water, and iso-propyl alcohol. Mix in spray bottle, spray on, wipe off, and no more static issues for a real long time. The problem with the dryer sheets is that you don't get uniform transfer of the conductive material that causes the static to discharge.

Also, don't overlook the fact that we bring a lot of static to the workplace as well. Walk across that synthetic carpet while wearing clothes made of partially synthetic fabrics, you end up like a comic book character that emits lightning bolts although a lot smaller than theirs.

While spraying down the Chargemaster consider spraying the carpet you have to walk across in order to get to your work area. Also consider wearing only cotton shirts/pants rather than "polyester" 8)

You can also put down an anti-static mat where you stand, and put an ant-static pad under your chargemaster.
