RCBS Charge Master

I purchased an RCBS Charge Master and the electronic display was defective so I returned it to RCBS for a replacement. The replacement arrived and they have changed the plastic dispensing pan with a metal pan that weighs 343 gr. It seems that the accuracy of the scale has increased with the heavier metal dispensing pan.

Has anyone else had this experience?

I use a metal pan with mine. It weighs 176gr. Maybe I should glue a quarter to the bottom & try it.

Mike - My second ChargeMaster came with a metal pan that weighs 336.5 grains. Accuracy did not improve and the incorrect readings continue. Still waiting for my thirds machine from RCBS. If still no joy, I'll use your idea to modify it.

Heard anyone with the "magic code" to type in to slow the dispense speed? I have not. If no machine this week, I'll call again to check up on the shipment and also ask for the "magic code".

I did a "search" on this board for "RCBS Chargemaster" and found one thread that listed an RCBS Teach by the name of Don Legg. The toll fre number listed was 1-800-533-5000, so I called them this afternoon. I was forwarded to the tech support line and was #1 in the waiting que. After 3+ minutes Mr. Don Legg answered the phone and talked me through the "Magic Keypad Code" to slow down the speed of trickeling of the final several tenths of a grain of powder.

I had my Chargemaster all warmed up and calibrated before I made the phone call. I'm sorry I didn't have time to write down all of the keys he had me press to facilitate the slowing down of the trickeling, but it does seem to help from getting charges that are .2 of a grain or .3 of a grain over the desired powder charge.

Mr. Legg also thought that my calibration weights might be off just a tadd as well. He asked me if I wanted a new Chargemaster and, of course, I told him that if it was a better machine than the one I had, then I would like a new one. He said it would be a better machine. They are shipping a new one out to me as soon as they get them in stock and enclosing a return tag for me to ship my old one back. In the meantime, he is sending a couple of new calibration weights to see if that will help correct some of the overweight charges.

Silverfox, pitty you did not have a chance to write down the steps as we on the Forum are needing this procedure.

I am on by third ChargeMaster and it seems to be the best of the three. Last session was only 15 223 Rem. cartridges, but all but 2 were spot on the desired charge and the other 2 were only .01 over. Maybe they are shipping with the code already in now.

I emailed RCBS a week ago about the code. Still not response.

Travelor--When the tech was talking me through the magic keypad strokes I had two choices.

1) I could spend my time writing the steps down,if I could write that fast) OR---

2) Perform the keystrokes as he talked me through it.

I chose the second option, because I thought I could always call him back when my new ChargeMaster arrives and he'd talk me through it again. However, this time, I will write the steps down. It would be better to record the steps because they were quite long and the things he was asking me to check for on the LED readout were kind of involved. Maybe they should post those steps on their Web site for all ChargeMaster owners to use. That would probably cut down on the amount of time the techs spend on the phone too.

I received a ChargeMaster today and it worked great with none of the above mentioned problems. Dispenses fast until it comes to within a grain or two of the desired powder weight then really slows down and trickles very slowly. My pan weighs 357.3 grains. My Redding powder measure will now be a back-up. I think that I made a good decision as a result of reading this forum. Thanks for the help.

Good news on your new ChargeMaster. I would keep an eye on it for a while, using your "old" scale to verify the charges. After about 100-200 rounds loaded and verified, please report back.

,BTW my 3rd Chargemaster's pan weighs 345.5 grains and seems the best of the three. Hopefully RCBS is shipping now with the new "magic" code already input.)

I am still waiting for my check weights to arrive and for the new Chargemaster to arrive as well. I talked to Mr. Legg some time around the second week of September and was promised the check weights would be sent right away, but that there were no Chargemasters available to be sent out at that time.

I am a patient man, but it certainly shouldn't take 4 weeks to ship two check weights out to NW North Dakota--should it???? I am running out of patience and will have to get back on the phone and call Mr. Legg to see if he has forgotten about me.

I just got off the phone with Mr. Legg from RCBS. I did get my chargemaster reprogrammed and have the info for reprogramming. I was asked not to post the info -- at least not yet. He is trying to get approval from higher up to get the info out -- should be quite soon. There are some liability issues that will need to be dealt with first. For now just call the tech line and ask for him and he will walk you through it. There are also three different programming codes for the chargemaster and each will be different.
