Rant mode on

There is a very simple solution to your problem, don't buy or sell to anyone on the internet. I did it once here, the seller was a perfect gentleman he sold me a perfect product on time and for the price we agreed on. When it got here I realized I should have looked at one first, I didn't like the reticle at all. He gets a 100% approval, me not so much.

Many of us are Leary of the safety of electronic payment being tied to our banking accounts. We grew up knowing what a “House of Cards” means.
Tie it to a credit union or other separate account and don't keep but a few bucks in it. As soon as payment is made, transfer it or make a local withdrawal. Over the years with sales, I let the buyer decide how to pay. Keeps both of us happy.

We like the 'instant gratification' of online payment and fast shipping.

When we had our business that was a goal of ours. We wanted to ship same day, and in those days USPS Priority was mostly a 2-3day ship time. We decided to use Paypal as the main means of funds transfer simply because we did not want to deal with the security issues of handling credit card data. In the years we used it we never had a problem with many thousands transactions. No refund issues, no customer complaints about payments. It helped that we readily resolved shipping and quality issues with the customer. Having a good relationship with the local Postmaster was a huge part of that. FWIW, I'd never use the F&F mode unless it really was F&F.

Of the few checks we processed we had quite a few not clear and one ended up becoming a fraud investigation. They created the most customer issues for us so we eventually stopped accepting them, especially since it was far less than 1% of our sales. We did accept PO MO's but we also waited until the local PO cleared them. The Postmaster let us know that fake MO's were very common. I did not treat them as cash, despite the advertising. Same with cashier's checks. We never shipped a product until the payment cleared.

I've never ordered a product expecting it to ship without the proper payment clearing the bank. I can count on one hand the number of checks or MO's I've written in the past couple of years. Have hundreds of personal Paypal transactions in the past year with no issues. If I don't know the company I am dealing with I will only use Paypal or my AMEX account (IMHO AMEX has the best fraud protection group).

Electronic monitoring? Yep, I accept that it is done on a regular basis. I've been monitored by the government for over 50 years due to the jobs I've had. Internet monitoring, yes, it is common, by government and private entities. Bank records are traced. Phone calls/texts/emails are monitored. If you're in this forum you're probably also monitored by other federal agencies, not just limited to firearms transaction forms. And, yes, three of our income sources are government agencies. The fourth is tied to a government agency. The only transactions that are hard to trace are cash (not impossible, only difficult).

The only good thing about all that is you are one of millions the government really doesn't care about. If they do take an interest, there isn't much they can't find out. Private companies/criminals have almost the same capability if they are willing to invest in it.

I have had many more problems using my ATM/Credit card online
than I ever have using "Other" forms of electronic payment
people can steal your CC number
They cannot get into your private bank account to initiate a transfer unless they somehow get your passwords
(that I have seen or experienced anyway)

I'll second that. I NEVER use my debit card online. Never. In fact I use only the AMEX card online. And, yes, I've had other credit card info stolen from online transactions several times.
