Range know it alls !

Do most of my shooting at two different clubs. At my original club, I am the top gun (shark), two years ago, started shooting 600 yards (guppy). Either place, outside of "hi", I try not to speak, unless spoken to and never criticize another person's equipment. I truly enjoy my time spent shooting, but it is also a search for knowledge. I'm retired and in my 60's, so I have time, and like a good conversation and have had many of them at the range, but try to be constantly aware that some people just want to shoot and leave. Just got my NRA RSO card, so maybe, I will be forced to speak up. In life you can speak up and convince people you are a fool, or stay quiet and just let them think it.

Gun owners are an extremely diverse group with many different personality types and opinions.

I used to cringe walking into my LGS with all the "booger eaters" fondling guns acting out their Rambo fantasies. Lots think they know it all as I hear them pass on terrible advice to someone new to the sport. I just go about my business and get out pretty fast. And public ranges really are a terrible place for an f class or BR shooter to try to do anything serious.

What we seem to forget is that most of us on this site are here to learn and as the name "accurate" shooter implies, get better. But there is a huge component of gun owners that simply like to blow crap up and make lots of noise and act like some movie star doing unrealistic feats with automatic weapons.

I choose not to hang out with this group of people not because they are bad people but because we simply don't have the same interests or personality.

But what we all must remember is that gun ownership is constantly under threat from a variety of political groups. Every booger eater, Rambo wanna be or annoying know it all is a gun owner that votes. So I have simply learned to go about my business while remembering we need every vote even if they are not "my" kind of gun owner.

I see the rivalry between F class and CMP stuff that just makes me shake my head. Egos and power trips tearing the sport apart.

In the OP's defense just because its a "Public" Range doesn't mean he, you or I don't deserve our personal space. we pay our taxes and that pays for that Public Range! I was always taught it was rude to butt into others business.

Guys, I shoot to clear my head and get away from things for awhile. I tinker and fiddle with my guns and reloading because it helps me to focus on just those actions for the time I am doing it. Its my drug of choice and my therapy. During the little time I have to spend doing my thing I don't need other people telling me;
1, Everything they feel am doing wrong (Unless its a safety violation then by all means).
2, What equipment I need to buy to be cool.
3, Just how cool they are.
As long as I am being safe and following the range rules leave me the hell alone. I shoot the guns I shoot because I like them. I choose the caliber I shoot because I like them. I pay for my stuff and I don't need the peanut gallery offering unsolicited comments or information. If you have a questions or a comment ask while we are walking to the target line or or even better ask in the parking lot. Pickup tailgates are designed for shooting the bull, not the firing line. This to me seems to be a reoccurring problem with people now days everyone thinks they have a right to get in your business.

Many years ago, at our local range several times i watched from a distance, a shooter with all kinds of equipment, watching his target he only had one small hole on the top of the target the bottom had somewhat larger grouping, I waited for him to stop shooting, and waked over and spoke to him, the small hole on top had 5 rounds in it, I said that i had never seen a small group as that, he sat me down, gave 3 rounds schooled me some, One hole, I'm hooked. He mentored me till i caught on, that was in 1977 He passed a few years ago, I'm still shooting, that's what happen when you ask instead of telling before you are asked.

I can easily see both sides of this issue , as I do all of my load development at the BA public range . We have more than our share of Rambo wanna-be's , complete beginners with the "Expert" boy-friend , with his never shot before girl-friend , who he's trying to impress . And all of the "other" issues mentioned already .
Un-case a custom "F"-class rifle in front of a lot of these people ; and you draw a crowd , likes flies to a half-eaten breakfast Burrito , left on a picnic table ..... And you get the usual experts ! Many are just plain curious , about the Bi-pod , or scope , or just how pretty the gun is . Or what caliber it is . Dealing with the "experts" ; I try to be polite , but brief ...Sending the message that they are intruding . The honestly curious , or fascinated , I try to give as much time as I can ; when possible , usually saying something like , "Well , I need to get busy" . And focusing on my work at hand . Some stay and watch for a while , but most go back to their own stations . But I will not tolerate a obnoxious wise-guy , know-it-all . They get a large dose of Rude quickly , and told to just , "Go away" . This is not a Debating Society , and I'm not here for your entertainment . I am getting ready for a Match , against some of the best shooters in the world . And you're not in that group , as far as I can tell . Rude ? Yes ...Effective ? Also , Yes .

I didn't go to the range yesterday, but I did visit a local gun shop on a quest to find a S&W 617. I may have been there a total of 5 minuets, and in that short time, I learned why I should never own a Smith & Wesson, a Ruger, should only drive a Chevy truck and other odds and ends about the Obama Administration that I had no clue about. These tidbits didn't come from behind the counter, but from a well schooled sexual intellectual customer. In a low voice, I told the gentleman behind the counter, I couldn't do it, as in work in his position. He replied, "It's really hard some days". No doubt.

I do it. It is hard.

I can pull out a gorgeous F Open rifle, set it up on a $1000 rest and all the guys at the local range will come up and ask is “wow is that a Nightforce scope!?” Lol

don't worry,I show up with my FnFal 308 Creedmoor and set up on your FAR right side, slam in a 20 round mag and let go, all them tacticool guys will disappear from your end.

Ok, two guys show up.I`m the only one on the range. They get out and walk over to me and the "expert" says we need to hang a target as he is charging the other guy by the hour for advice.I say ,go ahead. I sit for about five minutes until the xpert finds the target and then bums pushpins off me. Target hung,as they walk back past me the pert says to the sucker I don`t need all that fancy, expensive crap to shoot. Pointing to my Rem. 700 HB setting in an AICS stock. Fancy Leupie scope. Now they bring the suckers gun to the line. I`m not sure what kind of bolt action it was, didn`t care, but I watched to pick up some pointers from a walking, talking shooting legend. He the pert tells his client the first thing we always do is clean the rifle before we shoot and proceeds to stick the cleaning rod down the barrel from the 'exit hole" his term. I,being the helpful person I am, packed up and went home. Laughing the whole way. They ARE everywhere. Have a good weekend guys. Jeff
Damn, I didn't know you shot at my range. Had a guy just like that but there are other rules he didn't read too. As in you can only bring one guest, not four, and then call cold range when he was ready, not when anyone else was ready. One thing I definitely know is "I am far from from an Expert."

Thank you for your service!
Whoa, wait a minute - make no mistake, I perform many "services" for my customers. But it's for profit and the only thanks I deserve is if I give you great "customer service" which I get paid to do.
I also get paid to give good knowledgeable advice and if I hear crappy advice being given, I call it out as such. I appreciate the comment but reserve that for a Marine, Soldier, Seaman or Pilot.
I have ear plugs if the BS gets to bad.
I thank my customers for a meager paycheck:eek:
