range capacity question

We are in the process of upgrading our rifle range and are trying to predict what the membership capacity would be with a certain amount of benchrest positions. The questions I have is

1. how many members do you have in your club
2. how many shooting positions do you have, and
3. do you have any line ups to get a shooting position?

thanks

Mike

1. Currently we have a 1350 membership cap, it was what we felt the facilities could handle without getting out of hand.
2. One range has five benches, 100-200 and two 100 positions shooting station. The other, eight, two at 7-1/2, 15, 25 and 50.
3. Depends on the day and time of year. During weekdays there may a few, weekends maybe a dozen or so. During the months of October and November, deer-bear seasons, at times its take a number even with the club rule the month of November members only and guests fifteen years or under. When one becomes sixteen they must apply for membership.

Thanks Bill. We have room for 25 benches, so were thinking of 22 benches and three prone positions .. something like that.

Shooting is much more popular than non-shooters would expect. As expected, during hunting season, folks that would never visit the range come out to sight in & shoot. One of the ranges that I use has about 30 shooting positions at 100 & 300 yards and many more @ 40 & 50. During hunting season all at 100 & 300 are in use. I would guess about 75% are members, 15% guests supervised by members and 10% cheats sneaking into the range by tailgating or using members combos for locks To get a handle on use, I would contact my local fish & feathers and ask them how many hunting licenses they issued in that county and then take a look at how popular shooting is and how many people live in the vicinity. I would then evaluate how many other ranges were near by. Finally, I would take a look at the availability of public lands, like BLM that might provide sight-in. Should your range use public funds, I expect several free range use days might be required and membership may not be arbitrarily restricted.

Finally to answer your question - 350 - 400 members, 30 positions at 100 & 300 yards, no reservations, first come gets it. I do lots of .22 RF shooting at 50 yards at tiny targets during hunting season.

1500 cap- Two ranges.
3 benches , 100 to 300 yards. Room to shoot prone or standing.

3 benches & 2 standing 50, 25 and portable target holders for closer.

Most members are seasonal hunters. When range is busy, 15 minutes bench time.

Covered firing points are great. Protection from rain or hot sun.

Yearly Membership is $20.

Our range membership is 500 shooters but it can support 1000.

We have four specific ranges:

20 pistol lanes - 5 yards to 60 yards

10 bench rifle ranges - 100 yards

2 long range benches - 200 yards

Currently building a 300-600 yard range

A very large multi use area that’s just covered with no benches. It’s an open area that goes to 100 yards.

All the lanes have telephone poles with wires across them to hold targets and steel.

We also have a large parking lot and a standing /waiting area behind the covered benches. It’s all spaced evenly and very nicely done.

The covered area is heavy telephone poles, 4x4 beams, tin roof, with a fan vent system to keep the bugs off, and about 8 inches of concrete. The benches are concrete with carpet on them. The carpet is rolled up and stored in a PVC pipe next to the benches when not in use.

Membership is $200 a year, no range safeties. You can go whenever you want. It’s big boy rules.

We have unlimited membership and it is currently 3500 to 4000 members. We have 6 ranges:

#1 30 yard pistol (plans to expand to 50 yards) 25 places
#2 50 yard pistol 30 places
#3 100 meter rifle and pistol 30 places
#4 (planned 100 meter)
#5 shotgun with 25 yard pistol lane
#6 300 yard rifle 30 places.

It gets busy on weekends but generally no waiting unless there’s a match.

The real issue is having enough RSOs.

We have 6000 members in a metropolitan area. Pistol and shotgun ranges and 25 benches @ 100 yard range, 25 benches @ 200 300 range, and 25 benches @600yards .
Sometimes on weekends the 100 yard will get busy but never at 200 300. 600 is for matches only and draws 30 per week. Most of the other ranges get there use on the weekends but it's never to bad.
