Looking for a place to shoot your Long Range Rifle, Try Sacramento California

We shot a 200 yard BR match this morning at Sac Valley. Most every Tuesday and Friday of the year is a short-range BR practice/test day. Most every Tuesday of the year is also a 1000 yard practice/test day, on e-targets. Members may reserve any of the ranges on any available days for personal use, which is quite handy. Some of us spend FAR too much time out there. Hope that this thread encourages more people to come out and play.

its no problem --people are allowed to travel and hunt and shoot in america---some news networks and wannabe politicians spread false info that has many folks concerned---just pack your stuff and go enjoy life--Roger
How do they feel about 50cal long range rifles? Carrying like a glock 17 with the standard magazine or any pistol concealed? How about lead core bullets? Whats the current law on chassis guns a lot use at long range- do they fall into the assault weapons category due to the grips like they do in other states like new york? Do you have to get your ammo registered bringing it in? Isnt this how they control the flow of locally illegal ammo from other states coming in?

No 50 cal allowed, standard capacity mags are legal to own and use (cannot buy/sell them), lead is fine for anything that doesn't have fur or feathers, gun configuration only applies to semi-auto detachable magazine fed platforms, you can bring as much ammo as you want to shoot, too.

Ok so a bolt action that has an AR style stock is legal with detachable mag and you can target/recreational shoot with lead bullets. Does this apply to shotguns, like skeet ranges, and does the leas free bullet apply to public land or is there a difference there as opposed to a private range?

If someone is further south in SLO County, the San Luis Obispo Sportsman's Association front range has steel to 700 yards. The back range around the mountain has steel to 1400 yards. The range out by Cuyama 2 miles down the 33 has a monthly match to 1000

Yes bolt action/mag fed with pistol grips are legal. Shotgun is the same as rifle. Lead shot on clays non-lead for hunting. One thing to note is that if you bring ammo in you need to shoot it or bring receipts from place of purchase outside of state.

So what keeps residents from bringing in ammo from other states and stocking up? Whats the rules on purchasing or holding ammo for a resident?

Just the threat of getting caught bringing ammo in. I hunted Arizona and there are check points coming into the State. I was never questioned… Buying ammo here is almost like DROS except no wait time as long as you have gone through DROS your in the system. They run you through the system every purchase. PITA..

there are check points coming into the State.
There are "agricultural inspection stations" on the major highways coming into the state. Picture the old style toll booths with a guy in the glass box. They are there to help keep out any nasty agricultural pests that may hitchhike on foodstuffs into the state. During big-game hunting seasons, Fish & Game MAY also be at the check stations in an attempt to keep CWD out of the state. Most of the time, the drive-through stations are not even occupied, so you pass right through. And when they are occupied, they simply ask if you have any fruits or vegetables in your vehicle and then send you on your way. They have no right or desire to search your vehicle. What keeps residents and non-residents from moving ammo across the borders - nothing. But if you do, be certain to post it on facebook.

We crossed thru the “Bug Staions” all the time either crossing the Oregon or Nevada border. We also declare deer or elk coming back into Ca each year. We are asked if we have game and if so we fill out a declaration. Never been asked by Fish and Game or the Agg inspector to look at a gun or ammo. Got chewed out once for hauling some firewood back after a hunt. They are just interested in keeping out bugs and CWD on game animals. DON’T bring a head back with the brains still in the skull. So coming over to shoot a tournament would be a piece of cake. Leave your bananas at home.

If some one was to actually decide to go to Sacramento, how would you get anno and a gun into the state?

That's a weird one. The gun itself is no problem, as long as it complies with CA law (this mostly applies to semi-auto rifles. Bolt gun should pose no problem.)

Ammo cannot be imported by an individual, neither a resident or out-of-state visitor. Ammo has to go to an FFL who performs a background check before releasing the ammo to the customer.

Oddly, California's ammo background check law does not have a provision for selling to out-of-state residents. If you're not a resident, you can't buy ammunition in California (I don't know if this was intentional or an oversight. I also don't know if there are plans to change that. Knowing CA, probably not.)

So if you are coming from out of state to shoot at Sacto, either bring components and load your own once you're in the state, or go the illegal route and either sneak it in or have someone here give you ammo to use.

That was the reason i asked. I have a friend that went to California a few months back and he visited a guy he used to work with. The guy has a nagant revolver and no ammo. My friend bought a bunch of ammo to send him and the was told it was against the law to ship or hand deliver the ammo. Now my friend is looking for a nagant revolver to buy cause this ammo is never going to get to the other guy in California.

Assuming your friend can't hand-deliver due to distance, AFAIK, he can ship it to an FFL (recipient will have to locate one who will accept and do the transfer) and the FFL will do the req'd background check and the recipient is home free. Not against the law to ship (at least as far as I know); you just can't ship it directly to the end user.
