need idea's for range box. want to build a range box over this winter, but don't know what i want. i shoot benchrest and groundhog matches. pictures would be nice. thanks.

Anything that you build from wood will turn out to be pretty heavy, and it will get heavier the older you become. This link will show you what has worked best for me.

Isn't that the sad truth.

What I found that works for me is the stackable rolling tool boxes from Sears. I think Home Depot and Lowes have their own versions of them also. About the only thing that does not fit in is my gun.

I also considered buiding one out of wood, as a Winter project, but knew the weight would be a factor.

Bought the MTM SPUD Utility Dry Box, shown on page 131 in Sinclairs 2012-B catalog. 15" long x 8.8" wide and 13" high, for me, a perfect size. Lightweight, very sturdy, water-proof to some degree, like the lift out tray. Use it all the time. Cost is $28.99. Plain O.D., not camo.

Also tried the smaller size that is 9.4" high, same length & width, but for me, it's just a little too small, so I use it for at-home storage. A very well made product ( in the USA) and well worth the cost.

I have built a couple of dozen shooting box's over the years. Weight depends on what material ( type of wood) and just how thick you make that wood. The box in these pictures was made from Birdseye Maple and I thinned it on my planner it weighed finished 19lbs. it is big enough to carry way more stuff than I ever need but I keep it filled any way.

I went to home depot and bought one of their stacking plastic tool boxes on sale ($35 I think). It has wheels and a drag handle like rolling luggage, but bigger wheels. Works fine. Cheap is good.

It is really easy for a box, store bought, or home made, to become too heavy. I keep all my reloading stuff and hand tools in one box, my cleaning stuff in another, flag stands in a zip up bag, the flags in their own box, and my rest and bag(s) are carried without container. Of course my cleaning rods are in a two rod case (home made). The box that has all of the reloading stuff, including components, and hand tools, weighs about 35#. As far as I am concerned, that is my upper practical limit. Also, I would not put solvents and brass in the same container. Ammonia fumes are bad for brass. Where I shoot, I can unload my vehicle close right in front of the shooting benches, during a cease fire. If I hustle (and I always do), I get it done, and my vehicle out of the way, before the last fellow is back from his target.

Two comments I've heard lately at the range:

"If you're packing so much that your range box needs wheels, you're bringing too much".

"Remember the days when everything we took to the range fit in a 30 cal Ammo Box?"

Lately I've noticed that I shoot far better when I take less in to the range with me. Not as tired before I start.

I got this for taking to benchrest matches and I love it. I keep all the cleaning supplies in the clear containers on top and the rest of the compartments hold all that I need.

True words to think about.. Lol..

I built a box this past yr to haul all my stuff and the chassis is based on a game hauler. Works great, every thing fits, but now I need a 4-wheeler to pull it, pickup to haul it and friends to help move it around ..

Back to the drawing board this winter... ;)

I have been using the big MTM Box with the standup "V" posts to rest the rifle in while cleaning - a great box BUT I always end up with solvents, oils, etc leaking out and getting on everything else in the upper tray level. That being the case, I have opted to pull all my liquids in small plastic after-market "gunsmith" bottles and the larger cans such as wipe out cans from the bottom of the box. Right now I've put everything in a small cardboard box - I'm thinking of making something that will have reconfigurable dividers to put all the liquids in - the bottles need to stand up - if they fall over, sure as hell something will leak out. I figure something with inside dimensions of about 8-10 in wide x 12-14 in long - would need to tall enough for lid to close over a can of wipe out or a can of kroil, so about 9-10 in high. Before I get started on building this out of wood, has anybody seen anything like this that's already available?
