Randolph Rest Owners...Read Please

Here's my first attempt at making a better plate.

First off I ditched the original base and started fresh. Any add on plate to any rest has raised the height in my experience and brought its own problems.

Cut a new base out of 1" steel plate and bolted the Randolph mechanism to it.
I also pushed out the footprint on all three screw holes.

The original Randolph base weighs just over 7# the mechanism that sits atop it weighs 12#
My new base weighs 34# and all in with everything it weighs 48#
I'm going to shoot it today to see what if any changes need made then I'm going to lighten it up and paint it.

The cost I have in this one especially if I were to get paid for my labor is way past what anyone would pay for one.
I do know how to make one half the weight, keep the height original and increase the footprint as well.
If I made a run of 10 I could estimate a cost then put a price on them.
This set up would come in at 30# all in and could be lightened somewhat but I think a 30# Randolph on the bigger footprint would be perfect.

Looks ugly in the pic but it's not done yet.

So out came the hot wrench this morning and the lightening process commenced.

Cut 5# off it then drilled out another 1/2# 3/4" at a time. The scale at work said 28# as pictured.

Added one more pair of leveling screw holes that can also be used to mount ammo holders and other items. Added 3 single threaded holes also for ??? whatever.
Shot a couple coats of flat black primer to keep the rust off it until I can test it out again.

Reassembled and the bathroom scale at the house says 43#, it feels lighter than that so I'm not sure. I know I'm going to like the clearance around the windage knob.

DH...1/2" plate? Have you figured a cost per plate ? I'd be interested.I like putting the main Randolph minus there plate to keep height to minimum. Thanks,Pete

Looks good Dave. My Max weighs 40.5 and the Sinclair with the steel plate is 51 pounds. I think 35-40 would be about perfect.
If you make some I’ll take one. Have wanted to try the Randolph but the light weight was one thing holding me back.

Hopefully after I get past deer season and Thanksgiving I can get some numbers put together.
