QUICKLOAD DATA for 20-250AI...? Berger 55 gr Bullets

I'm working up a load for my Coyote Killer... 20-250 AI, ( not 22-250..but 20-250 = 20 cal) with 55 gr Bergers... and I'm getting close, but it feels like something is missing... and was wondering if getting into quickloads would make the difference. I've been using H-4350 powder with good groups, but the speed is a tad slower than desired.

38.5 grs makes 5 bullets cluster at 100 yds... but the speed is only 3714 fps.... with CCI 200 primers... with bullets just touching the lands.

41.7 grs has her spitting them out to around 3920 fps average, with 3/8"" groups, but she seems a little hot with hard bolt extraction, and the primer hole has a jagged feel to the finger when rubbed across it.... that's probably not good....LOL.

Anyways... what I'm looking for is a powder that will give me more FPS without higher pressures.

Which is needed... a slower or faster burn rate powder?

I was wondering if Quickloads would have some insight, if I made all the data available to it.

QuickLoad will be very helpful for what you want to do. Slower burning powders (until you run out of case capacity) will give you more velocity.

Basically a powder is too slow if you can't get enough of it in a case. Or if the barrel is too short. QuickLoad can answer both of those questions. It is a great tool.

I hate to buy a 100 dollar program for one load workup... is there a better way... or someone who can pull up some information for me...? thanks...Dan

Source the Sierra manual. p.270
22-250 AI
Max listed charges. To many to list all.

All listed as 3800 fps. 55 gr bullet.
42.9 XMR-4350
37.5 IMR-4895
38.3 IMR-4064
38.7 RE-15

Listed as 3850 fps
41.4 Big Game
44.5 760

---------------------------------------------------------

Source Berger manual.
STD 22-250. Doesn't list AI.
6 powders listed above 3700 fps. Max charges in the manual. No data for 3800 fps. 55 Gr bullet
35.5 IMR 4064 3708 fps
35.5 Varget 3705 fps
35.7 IMR 4895 3793 fps
36.5 IMR 4320 3742 fps
39.5 WIN 760 3721 fps
39.7 H380 3717 fps

A big list. Does anyone have data for RE-17. Is it suitable for a 22-250 AI? It's supposed to give 100-150 more fps with safe pressures compared to other powders. I think it was Salaazar that gave RE-17 results for one of his rifles on this website. Search for RE-17 you might find something usefull. I think I would try IMR 4895 it's reasonalbly priced and a commonly stocked powder. RE-17 would be interesting. I have a pound I would give you if you lived in the Cleveland area. I got real low velocity in my 6BR. There was a bright sun overhead that day and I got some goofy Chrono numbers. Need to try it one more time. I think it's burn rate is more for 243 -308 size cartridges. With my 6BR I can usually shoot more powder than listed as max in the manuals. Looks like you may be maxed out for 4350?

WOW... that is some good stuff Webster... but how will that 22 caliber (22-250 AI) data compare with my 20 cal (20-250 AI)...?

I was thinking that I might need a slower burn rate powder for pushing that 20 cal bullet out of the 22 cal case.

Thanks Webster for the info....

I"ve been wanting to try the RL 17... but can't find it in my area.... I don't guess you want to come on down to SC for a visit at my place for some deer hunting.... and powder delivery...?

QuickLoad is very valuable when working up loads - and especially for wildcat cartridges. I know I wouldn't be without it and it is worth every penny.
I seriously doubt that this is the last load you will ever develop. So you should "bite the bullet" and purchase the software.

LOL... I have bit the bullet so much in the last few months building two long range wildcat rifles... 20-250 AI & 22-243AI, plus their special dies and stuff.... that my wife is biting my butt.

Ouch... there she goes again....LOL.

Quit it Honey... go back to biting your nails.

Sorry I thought it was a 22-250 AI. Sometimes I think I might be dislexic. 4895 still might be a good choicce. Maybe the QL people can help.

20-250 and 20-250 AI are not built in cartridges in our version of QL. Building an appropriate file for a new cartridge is a bit more of a project than running some data on cartridges with existing files. It also introduces greater uncertainty in the outcome of the simulation matching your results.

The above advice is good: if you prefer not to buy a copy of QL, then if H4350 is leaving extra room in your case, go to a slightly slower powder, such as H4831. If H4350 is a compressed load, then go to a slightly faster powder. We prefer the Hodgdon Extreme powders over the RL series, because the RL series is more temperature sensitive, esp RL 22.

I just told my wife today that it looked like I was going to have to buy quickloads to find the reloading answer to my wildcats.... but now your saying that quickloads does not have any workable data...?

The current version of Quickload does not have the 20/22-250 AI in it's cartridge database but if you had the QL program loaded on your PC , start playing with it , develop an understanding of how it works with some work you will be able to generate some useful data . I have done this with other wildcats by changing the caliber of the parent cartridge to the wildcat you are working with . It's not as easy as just that but not impossible . If I can do it anybody can. FWIW

I have a few lbs of 4831 that I thought about trying... I guess I will now.

I guess I need to get that program... thanks for the tips.

Eggman... did you get your rifles back....?

Slower - slowest, whats the difference. ;D Good info on trying H4831. That is what I would do. QL is $150.00+ I believe. There is no Inner Circle here. Most people would not want to be held responsible if they gave you bad data and something went wrong, or they gave you good data and you did something wrong. I'm not trying to be a hardcase here, it is just the truth. I have shared loading info with many on here, especially if it is in QL. When I read it in your thread title I knew that the 20-250AI was not in QL. Like Nomad47 said it is a valuable tool, just like a chronograph.

I ran R17 in my 20-250 behind the 55s.

I was pushing them at 3600fps. Don't remember the charge but it worked very well. I would assume you could get a little more velocity from an improved case using the same powder.

I do think think ahoy really needs to go much faster than that though
