quick sanity check, straight 6BR velocities

Been reading too much over the past few days, head is spinning
Pretty new barrel, less than 100 rounds, 26" varmint contour, straight 6BR using Lapau brass, 450 CCI, mid 60s F today

105 B VLD -10 thou off lands
30 grains Varget, three shots avg = 2,775 fps, 30.4 gr Varget avg = 2,784 fps ... are those velocities in the ball park?

95 gr Berger VLD -10 off lands
29.7 gr Varget, six shot avg = 2,835 fps, 30.2 gr Varget six shot avg = 2,874 fps ... are those in the ball park?

My old 6br barrels were Kreiger 8tw, 28" ers, and with Fed 205, 29.5 to 30 gns/varget, a berger 105, I was getting on average 2820-2830fps tops. Never shot anything lighter than 105s.

Stop what you’re doing and get a seating depth test done. It’s the most important, do it first. You’re looking for 3 shot groups in the mid to low .1s or .0s.

Then, tweak on that powder a little and enjoy the barrel.

Right on the money. Put both bullets into the rifling. 015 and work away from the rifling. Drop down a grain of powder or so to start. You will probably be shocked as to the groups you get immediately. Good luck and keep us posted.

I would agree with every comment and add one thought that the powder lot numbers can play a big part in the equation, meaning this may just be a slower lot and the next batch might be 40 fps faster with the node moving slightly as well.

95 Bergers, go OVER, 3,100 fps with, 41 grs of StaBall ( 24 inch Barrel ) again from,.. a 6 XC

I am 2780 or so and it hammers with 107 SMK 30g Varget and a 450 primer

Into the lands until the engrave is a square mark in about the width of a land then tiny groups

The faster you go the more narrow the seating depth node may be. That's what Iv found.

If you do seating depth first, your powder windows will be wider. I don’t mean velocity because I couldnt care less, but the width of your accuracy nodes will be wider. I have testing this many, many times. Hope that helps.

IMHO

6br with a 105 ish and an 8 twist will shoot the smallest from 2650ish to about 2850ish depending on the barrel type. The typical upper accuracy node is 2750ish to 2780ish.
