Quick BRA seating test

I was able to get to the range and shoot a quick test on seating depth for 105 hybrids and 31.6g Varget

Looks like -0.010 and -0.040

Here’s what was strange. Shots 10-12 showed a jump in velocity, but subsequent shots settled back to the average. Any ideas on why? Here’s the chrono data

10 thou increments are too big in my experience, I know I could be missing stuff moving that far, I would look to tune in 5 thou increments and then even down to 3 thou

Also why jam them? they also shoot very well when jumped.

My starting point with 105 Hybrids is always 20 thou off, I can't think of a time when they didn't optimise when jumping somewhere between 35 thou off down to 5 thou off.

I like to be able to pull a round and not worry about it separating.

Primers have an effect of how the powder burns and velocity. So while you only changed primers you very well could have taken the load out of tune and you are getting false data. To test primers you really need to cover a little ground with powder charge with each one.

Unfortunately, I’m out of time. I have an F Class match to shoot in the morning. I have to pick one and go with it. Further load work will have to wait till after.

I think I’ll pick a different powder like H4895 and start from scratch. Haven’t been happy with the Varget.

I think you're so close with varget right now. I would fine tune seating around -.010 and -.040, maybe try .002 or .003 increments on either side of both. See how consistent it is. Varget always plays well with 205s for me. And like Alex said, once you've tuned that in, changing primers may require more fine tuning to get it back to where it should be. I know every barrel is different, but yours looks like it's pretty happy/close with where you're at.

I just set back one of my dasher barrels and the first load I tried worked pretty well at 200 yards, and it repeats. With Varget/205s. Not as much vertical in the subsequent groups either. That group measures ~.330", and the others a little less. I'll be using that at the ridgway championship starting tomorrow.

If Fclass, run with any of the primers except the 7.5s and know that points dropped will be due to conditions and not your load. (I would shoot 205s or BR4s due to least vertical). You can win a MR match with that precision. Now it is up to you to maintain the needed accuracy over your relays.

My thoughts.

as Alex stated above we do sell each primer short shooting a generic ladder such as this, I personally have seen it many times. but all is not lost if you have one or two primers winning out with the data on these targets, refine your load around them as there is know need to over complicate your efforts with more times out to verify what you all ready know. if there is some type of anomaly that keeps appearing that you do not like and will not clean up by all means throw another component type at it.

Interesting though, seeing the results of different primers. Thanks for posting
yes I would agree and in a test such as this you can cover a lot of ground quick. what I take from tests like this is what primer lines up best with the ammo prep I have formulated today. not really defining what is the "best primer" but rather what primer is best for this situation now.

Did you do your part in the match?

What did you go with for your final load?

Well, sorta.

I shot a 592 with 26 X's

Most of my dropped shots were because I missed it when the wind let off. Still learning.

I stuck with the 31.6g of Varget, -0.040 off, 205M primers. I do believe there's more accuracy there. I'll keep tweaking.

I'm looking at this test as very informative, in my case I'd like to trim a little off my groups would a .1 gr on each side of my current charge be covering enough ground in your opinion or should I be open to slightly more?
My current 6br 8-T load is
30.1 gr Varget
CCI BR-4
107mk at .015 jump
Also which primers would you recommend sampling?

I think that comes down to your lot of powder, and seating/load in general. Typically I've had good luck with 205m's with varget. A friend of mine has tuned his in with br4's. I've been doing some testing with 450s lately. Either way, I'd say pick a primer and tune it in.
