Questions for you skilled machine guys

Thanks for the education.

It appears I'm not the only one with limitations on the small hole gages.

Mike, I have the SHARS micrometer but am not sure about how close I can measure with it.
It appears to be a good tool in good hands.

Their stuff is decent, especially for that price. I have a Mit but they don't give those away. The Shars looks like a clone of the Mit.

Us 'po smiths use the telescoping gauges- but I've never seen those deep micrometer probes with the ball indents.
What's their range of adjustment, and what ops are they used for in your shop?

The internal bore mic I bought is three point contact for 6-8mm range (.236-.315) and accurate within +/- .00016". Some are two point contact.

I dislike the three point contact mikes since they will measure a hole which is not round as if it was. With two point contact, you can determine the maximum diameter or the minimum diameter. WH
Unless it's tri-lobed, in which case the two point will hide it and the three point will see it. I've seen bores .007 out of round measure "perfect" with two point tools.

That said it's not something you see much in reamed holes, I see it on parts turned in a lathe held by a 3-jaw chuck.

It's all in what you need to inspect. Match the best tool to what you need to inspect. You are right... Not the best for measuring a non round hole...
